Jon wrote the song about his best friend growing up who was killed in a motorcycle crash in 1989. He has mentioned that it was the fulfillment of a promise to his friend's mother that one day he would write a song about him! Instead of focusing on the tragedy, it is more about the inspiration and faith that his friend continues to guide him. Incidentally, the friend is the one who came up with the name "Iced Earth". |

| Having listened to the band now for a few years (13 or so now...), I can tell you that yes, the song was written about Christ as described by Jon in his notes...wish I could find that page again since it is no longer on their website! A friend of mine could see it as well, but he helped me redefine my description...it is a human perception of what Christ would have felt on the cross. That being said, I know that Matt has described it as applying to any great person who tries to effect positive change in the world. It is not mocking...and for some reason I find it inspirational! | |
