How I see the song going is that they are both frustrated with the relationship. He blames her and she blames him. Gotye gives his side of the story first, painting the picture that the relationship was bringing him down. So they break up (I'm guessing she broke up with him) and he says, "And you said that we could still be friends, but I'll admit that I was glad it was over." However he is angry that they didn't keep in contact. He uses phrases like "cut me off" "feels so rough" and "stoop so low" to make her the bad guy. Then Kimbra comes in with her side. He wasn't perfect and she couldn't keep "reading into every word" he said. I'm guessing that is the line she used to break up with him. I imagine him getting angry at that, especially when she suggests that they still be friends. "You said that you could let it go and I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know." A lot of people are using that line as cheating, but I just don't see that. I think he says a line similar to that in anger after their break up. Like he could let her go, and he wouldn't be caught up in her memory or the memory of the break up (like he is). I'm probably completely wrong, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. |
