I am actually taking my interpretation from the music video for this song, and I believe that it fits the meaning of the song perfectly. The video is set in Russia. You can see a woman who is very poor, and it appears that she works as a dancer in some sort of strip club to make ends meet. On stage at the club, the women are dressed with little clothing and very flashy headdresses. They are definitely on display. Later, we also see this woman practicing the art of dance, most likely ballet, in a studio. She appears very powerful when practicing this type of dance. What I see here is a woman who wants to escape not only her line of work, which objectifies the female body and presents it to a male audience, but to rise up against the patriarchal society. I don't necessarily see the woman as talking to a specific person in the song, but more speaking out from a female's perspective against the dominant, controlling male presence. She is not going to play into the male's wishes or desires any longer- "I won't soothe your pain/I won't ease your strain..." When she practices her dance in the studio, she appears powerful and composed- "steadily emerging with grace." These two forms of dance, one leaving the woman disenfranchised and the other leaving her empowered, could simply be metaphors for the ways in which women act around men, or act under patriarchal society. I definitely sense a deep-seated hatred within this song, which I believe is directed at men (and which I find completely understandable). However, I also fear that the woman in this song is becoming consumed by hatred, which ultimately is a weakness. My heart really aches, because I am a woman and I sometimes feel this way too. It is so depressing. |

It seems to me like Ada is either the speaker's good female friend who is getting married, or the speaker's fiancee about to be married to him. Even on the day of their wedding, Ada is having doubts. "Ada don't talk about reasons why you don't want to Talk about reasons why you don't wanna talk" She keeps going round and round the subject and her feelings on marriage. She is unsure if she wants to go through with it. "Now that you got everybody you consider sharp All alone, all together, all together in the dark Leave it all up in the air" Everybody who is invited to the wedding reception is dressed formally and seated, waiting for the bride to come in. They are "in the dark", as in they do not know what is happening. "Leave it all up in the air"- Ada is not sure what she wants. The speaker is "inside an empty tuxedo" with "grapes in [his] mouth... Waiting for Ada". The speaker is dressed in a tuxedo, indicating he is either a guest at the wedding reception, or possibly the groom. The part about grapes in his mouth may suggest that either he has a sour taste, meaning that he does not feel good about the situation of her marriage, or that he is unable to talk. When the speaker says he can "hear the sound of [Ada's] laugh through the wall", I think about him waiting outside her dressing room and hearing her laugh, maybe with her bridesmaids. In the end, the speaker hopes that Ada makes the right decision- "Ada I've been hoping you know your way around". |

Here it goes. I believe this song is about depression and contemplating suicide, eventually carrying it out. "In the deepest ocean The bottom of the sea" In a deep depression. I think this a pretty good metaphor for depression. "Your eyes They turn me Why should I stay here? Why should I stay" Here, the speaker may be reminiscing about a person they once knew, but is dead now. This is making the speaker think about dying as well. "I'd be crazy not to follow Follow where you lead" The speaker is thinking about dying. "I follow to the edge of the earth And fall off" Committing suicide by jumping from a high cliff, or maybe a structure, into the ocean. The impact would cause a human to die, and their body would sink to the bottom of the ocean. "I get eaten by the worms And weird fishes" After the speaker is died, their body will decompose and be picked apart by scavenger animals in the ocean. "Yeah I I'll hit the bottom Hit the bottom and escape" The speaker will jump into the ocean and die, hit the bottom of the ocean, and escape from life. |
