Sounds reasonable that it's about his mother dying. I'm a bit puzzled on how to translate the "mit dir"-pieces. The most common translation found on Ze InterWebs is "with you" (as opposed to "without you"), but could it also mean something like "just like you"? In which case the interpretation would be "Mit dir bin ich auch allein = I'm alone now just like you" and "Mit dir stehen die sekunden, lohnen nicht = just like you have come to a stand-still, so has time, and it's just not worth it anymore". The suicide-interpretation seems like projecting your own teenage angst on these quite grown-up guys - most people overcome sadness, even very deep sorrow, without dying from it... But I could be wrong, ofcourse. Unlike Shaftman, I don't believe in a single "true meaning" for any song... |

As this is a site about the meaning of songs, right, not about judging the quality of songs or (even less on topic) the quality of the album the song comes from... So, is there a native German speaker here? I'm Dutch, so I should come close, and that the song is about loss seems obvious to me. But what I do wonder about, though, are the "mit dir" pieces. "Mit dir bin ich auch allein" - is that just a reference to the general observation that, on a fundamental level, we are all alone in this world, even in the company of the one we love most? Or can the German also be interpreted as "just like you I am alone"? Even more puzzling is the "Mit dir stehen die sekunden, lohnen nicht". In the most-found translation this can only be interpreted as "when I'm with you, the seconds seem to last forever and not worth anything", which doesn't sound very positive and loving to me. Or could the "mit dir" again be translated as "just like you", in which case it would mean something like "Just like you have come to a stand-still, so have the seconds and it is not worth it anymore". Otherwise, (with the more common interpretation of the translation), I would say this is another of Rammsteins tongue-in-cheek not-so-positive songs, with the general meaning of "whithout you I can't live, but with you life is equally worthless". |
