| Sade – Bullet Proof Soul Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
Love is a gun. Some people will not only take advantage of your love for them, they'll also "love bomb" you to win you over. Then they do whatever they want with you. Hit me like a slow bullet. You were trigger happy, baby. At first it all feels so genuine that you can't help but fall hard, but then slowly they use that love to trap you. I came in like a lamb - another indication that the consequence of that love bullet was feeling weak and vulnerable. It's true, hurting someone this way is so wrong, using false love as a tool to manipulate, you are really skating the edge of evil. So if you do this kind of thing, it's you who is going to need the bulletproof soul. |

I discovered this song nearly 20 years ago, but haven’t thought about it in so long. I didn’t know the deeper meaning. What’s amazing is that it came to mind again now that I’m older and coping with drug withdrawal... even though I never knew that’s what it was written about. What a beautiful piece of poetry; it takes my breath away. Rest in peace, Antonio. I hope it would have been a comfort to know that this song still helps people fight their own demons. |

I agree with mgajosh, I've always thought that this song was about an old dog. "I own every bell that tolls for me" hearkens back to the famous John Donne: "any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." It seemed to me that this was a play on words: a dog may be called many times in his life, but in death, he finally owns the bell that tolls for him - which is to say, he becomes his own master. |

Disillusionment, both with religion and with being unreligious. Echoed by disillusionment with the dream of life in a huge city vs. life in a small town. Escaped to get away from a certain mentality, only to find that having everyone think like him isn't much better. |

| Neko Case – Lion's Jaws Lyrics | 13 years ago |

The feel I get from this song is one of overall regret over an affair with someone, tinged with loneliness and regret over the affair being over. the night I fell into the lion’s jaws to my regret and your delight ---This is clearly about sex. She gives in to him despite herself. those teeth themselves could not divine nor their pressure estimate ---"Those teeth" being part of the metaphorical lion's jaws, they are the persuasive lover's desire. The desire and its intensity could not divine/estimate, or perhaps they even clouded the lion's ability to see... the haze I wished you’d never break and to never contemplate ---It seems "the haze" existed before the teeth exerted their pressure, so perhaps she knew all along that this friend of hers desired her, but she viewed their friendship through "the haze", trying to ignore his feelings for her and continue as friends. momentum for the sake of momentum ---I think this is a double entendre. "Momentum" is a physical word, and in one sense it is a euphemism for sex. In a less tangible sense, it's a rationalization for why she gave in - she could no longer ignore the lion's desire, so she told herself that the relationship moving forward was preferable to standing still in its increasingly intolerable state. |
