At the start of the song Thom is dead or is about to die and the reverse run is the flash back looking over his life. He is running through it backwards travelling back in time. The snakes uncoiling represent the negative things in his life uncoiling and coming back to bite him as he travels back through those painful times. "But you see through me" - shows no one can see him moving back through time. "Running contrary ways Pulling off the anyways I'm messing up Messing up the patterns Breaking my trajectory" Shows how he is moving backwards through time as everyone else is moving forwards. Then the interesting part comes at "messing up the patterns, breaking my trajectory". He is trying to slow down this movement back in time, messing up the causation by drifting into a new part of the timeline. This is further reinforced when he says " I jump back around " he is reversing his reverse running to start moving forward. He is seeing things now that he shouldn't see because they didn't happen in his original timeline. He moves through life once again in a blur. He wants to go back in time and live his life again on a different trajectory in one which he might stay with his love, but he knows that no matter what trajectory he takes destiny will always make sure she "messes" him up. |

This one has a literal meaning of heartbreak and the feelings that come with it. It seems as if Thom has been through it before. As the love slips away Thom knows the process of grievance and what it feels like before, he doesn't "want it to start". The whole feel of the album can be linked to TKOL and this sense of wandering that was brought forward with Feral. Feeling lost in the woods stumbling around after loosing love. |

"Ingenue" means innocent young woman. I think this song is about Thom exploring an alternate reality where he isn't the legend that he is. Escaping the madness that he has created around him with the genius of his music. The female dancer represents an escape into innocence. Words like "you got me into this mess so you'll get me out" shows he was innocent before radiohead and wants to be innocent again through this escapist dance. "The seeds of the dandelion You blow away in good time I hope, I pray If I'm not there now physically I'm always before you Come what may" This is the idea that this fantasy of being innocent will never come true and blows away in good time. Thom is realizing it will never happen, not "physically" so he will always be first to face the world, but he always has this thought to fall back on whatever happens. "Gone with a touch of your hand Move through the moment Though it betrays Transformations, jackals and flames" This part of the verse demonstrates Thoms view of what will happen once he has stopped thinking about this other reality. When he goes back there are transformations, jackals and flames which reinforces how comforting the fantasy of being a Ingenue is compared to reality. Overall the song is about Thom confronting his fear of fame, through the alternate reality of being an Ingenue, and dealing with it in an artistic and poetic way. |
