I've also heard that this song may be dedicated to an ex-girlfriend of Guy Garvey, however, it reminds me of Amy Winehouse and how she lived her life dangerously with too much too young, if you will.
I heard Elbow cover Winehouse's 'Back to black' in the Radio 1 Live Lounge and Garvey spoke fondly of her before she tragically lost her life. |

I think it's mostly about the artist's love of being out in the open green space, and Mvula is from Birmingham and it seems she loves the green parts of the city. The other part with the lyrics saying 'wherever you take me, i go' suggests she's in love and will follow her lover, however she still misses the green spaces of live, and well-being that comes with that. |

i love the line 'what happens when the passage of time appears, see yourself as a child and it brings you to tears', says so much so easily and provokes so many thoughts. i think it shows the longevity he needs in a relationship |

it has taken me so long to interpret this song, but i feel it is about how him or the girl he is singing about haven't realised their feelings for each other, and the perseverance that it took before they realised what they felt. the references to the family and how much time they spent together show they know eachother very well but don't what to do with their connection.
i love the 'cheshire cat doorstep' part, makes me think of how he remembers clearly each time she leaves him and how precious each day is they spent together.
also get a sense of guilt with all the rhetorical questions in the last verse, with how what he's done isn't good enough |
