I think this song is about growth change death rebirth and a literal song to God (crying for freedom from myself and from the land) I think selling clothes to the state is a reference to starting a new and being naked to the world and very much shedding old thing. He reflects in the song throughout the song I’ve made a lot of mistakes in reference to his past very much leading to selling clothes to the state starting a new physically and mentally. I think this song is and homage to God the process of life and the complexities of letting go and letting grow and letting go. And growing and dying!!! God I love this song so much it’s such a beautiful and grounding song!! |

Not to be cliche with drugs being an underlying influence in songs but does no one else think brown sugar and chocolate tar as h. I mean if you just think of booga wooga being booger like she snortin that shit and chocolate tar candy bar and idk and he goes to say he cant stay in the kinky place because it doesn’t give him peace or a place to settle down. Not trying to say that this is what it means the shoe just fits for me and it seems pretty plain as day to me but other people don’t think so here’s my thought. Also I know booga wooga means lips hips and all that but maybe Marley wasn’t speaking native slang and was singing in plain English to his English fans. Idk maybe someone agrees?! |

Ok.... Hmm very dreamlike song could be describing a dream through different peoples eyes.
But I think he's talking about a psychedelic trip or acid trip just sayin. And an acid imparticularly because the lines "walked into the winter, fell back through the other side" would line up with the waves acid hits you in like you'll snap out of a trip and be sucked in. I think he feels as if he's looking at the world or universe from a third person view, though connected to the world. When I did acid I felt like i was zooming out and seeing I'm just a small part of a big thing everywhere and we're all needed. But anyways my point is he's noticing, observing, and feels connected from a 1st person point of view to far places while feeling connected just as well to his current state. And "short sleeves in the winter". It could be winter were he is but he is experiencing a life of someone across the globe that is currently in summer. And then he "falls back through the other side" as in being pulled back into his actual body. And so on I could break down the lines but Im too lazy. Just my thoughts on the song. Sorry to bring drugs into the equation but that my thoughts. |
