Pink Floyd – Echoes Lyrics 9 years ago
I read somewhere that this was supposed to be Roger Waters' idea of a utopia. Where "strangers passing in the street" acknowledge each others' differences with empathy rather than antipathy. So that means unlike other Pink Floyd epics, it is not pessimistic in theme. Strange then that the melody is probably the saddest and most melancholic sounding of any song in Pink Floyd's entire catalog, at least the beginning of the song with the "pings" and how the melody slowly forms around that.

@[poetwayne:1099] Yeah wow, I never knew it was Steve's lyric either. Probably was his first apart from some of the lyrics of "For Absent Friends" which Phil helped him with.

Genesis – Can-Utility and the Coastliners Lyrics 9 years ago
I read somewhere that this song was actually about an outdoor gig that was rained out and canceled due to bad weather. It was originally called "Bye Bye Johnnie". Lines like "the rising tide absorbs them effortlessly playing" could very well mean the band playing. And the King Kanute story could very well be a metaphor that fits this.

Genesis – Afterglow Lyrics 9 years ago
Tony once said how he noticed after a few days of writing this, he noticed it strangely resembled Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. I guess it could be about the mere feeling of the day after Christmas, that sort of let down disappointed feeling. An afterglow is a feeling that remains after a pleasure or happy experience. Otherwise, I agree with rovapu, about someone who knew all his qualities but never found a way to use them and worked hard and failed. And that is something I can personally relate to.

@[parberoo:288] Stagnation from their second album Trespass is about nuclear fallout. I never heard Tony say this song is about the same thing.

Anthony Phillips said in a recent interview that this song is about someone dying of cancer.

Anthony Phillips – Which Way the Wind Blows Lyrics 9 years ago
I always thought this song was about why he left Genesis. The lyrics, in second person apart from the chorus, seem to describe the aftermath of a nervous breakdown of someone who strived for achievement beyond reality. Ant was the one with the driving force in the early days of Genesis, and then quit at the age of 18. Not only was it stage fright, but a bunch of other things: mono and later pneumonia, his girlfriend dumped him and they weren't getting great turnouts at their early gigs. All these things combined eroded his confidence away. All this was a lot for a teenager to go through, in a band struggling to make it, living on the road and stuff.

Genesis – Visions Of Angels Lyrics 10 years ago
Anthony Phillips wrote the song. I've seen sources that said he had feelings for Pete's then girlfriend and later wife Jill Moore, but the song was actually written during the making of "From Genesis To Revelation" when Ant was still with his old girlfriend Lucy Burge, who he now claims was very much into Pete and sort of took him on as a second best. Yet Mike said in his book that when Ant and Lucy split, he'd never seen anyone take a breakup so badly. It's a bit like "Layla" in a way.

Anthony Phillips – God If I Saw Her Now Lyrics 10 years ago
Ant always seemed to be hung up on his old girlfriend Lucy from his Genesis days. Apparently when they broke up he took it pretty bad, and I guess this song documents a time when he tried to move forward with someone else, but just couldn't get over it still no matter how hard he tried. And how can you move forward in a new relationship when you can't get over the ex? Very sad when you think about it, knowing you want to let it go but can't.

Genesis – Harlequin Lyrics 10 years ago
I just got Mike's book, where he mentions he wrote the song in an attempt to double track the intertwining of two 12-string guitars he'd done with Ant Phillips on the previous album, but this time recorded both tracks in harmony on 12-string himself here. Lyrically he doesn't seem too proud of it, saying he'd subsequently learned not to use the word "Harvest" in songs. Don't know if that is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Neil Young, whose "Harvest" album came out around the same time as "Nursery Cryme", but this is still a neat little song even if it doesn't seem to go anywhere, seeing as the next song on the album is "Fountain Of Salmacis" which serves as a grand climax.

Genesis – Say It's Alright Joe Lyrics 10 years ago
Hear Mike Rutherford's "Moonshine" off his solo album "Smallcreep's Day". I see it as related to this, as well as "Twilight Alehouse" (an older song from the Peter Gabriel days) about a clinical depressive who finds an outlet through self-medicating with alcohol.

Mike Rutherford – Moonshine Lyrics 10 years ago
As in Moonshine whiskey. Not necessarily a song about alcoholism, but possibly a song about someone quite depressed who has found an outlet through self-medicating with alcohol. With lines like a cloud "closing in" and feeling it "burning in my blood, turning me around till there's madness in the air", and of course the last line in the song "courage deserted me tonight" says it all. The person is depressed, worn down and discouraged about things in life as an explanation of his slipping into his "hazy crazy world" of drinking. The theme is so real and fucked up and beautiful all at the same time, it bring me to tears. A brilliant song from my favorite Genesis-related solo album. And "Say It's Alright Joe" and "Twilight Alehouse" also seem to be about the same kind of thing. Mike can write these kinds of songs like no one else can, so deep and poignant, and very touching.

Genesis – The Lady Lies Lyrics 10 years ago
I had a crazy girlfriend once. Well, I knew her in passing for years. She was in her mid twenties, from a broken home (lived with her mom and brother), unemployed with an unused 1/2-assed associate degree from a local community college, no driver's license either. She was saying her mom was about to throw her out and was basically holding her under lock and key. Estranged from her dad b/c he was abusive etc. Saying she wanted to become more independent but her folks wouldn't let her. We were at this party together and as the night wore on and we got drunker and wilder, hooked up and didn't look back. I ended up taking her in and of course nothing ever improved. She couldn't keep a job, and refused to get the kind that required working on weekends. I tried to teach her to drive and she crashed my car. And what was worse, she still let her mother interfere with everything we did even though she claimed she threw her out. When I finally stood up to the mother a year later, she overdosed on pills, after which I got the ambulance to take her to the hospital to get her pumped and she was institutionalized. So, unlike the man in this song who "never escaped". I did escape! And when she was gone, everything was just as sound as it was before she had arrived.
