| Carolina Liar – Show Me What I'm Looking For Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think this could be argued to be about God, a girl, or life in general... that's not what the song's really about, though. Whoever he's pleading to, he's begging for a little affirmation, a little guidance, a little encouragement, because he's lost, and having a hard time holding on to what he would normally believe. "Show me what I'm looking for".... It's hard to find what you want if you don't know what it looks like. Honestly, I'd say he's just in a low point, lost in all aspects of life, down in the dumps of his own mind, and he's crying out to the wind, begging for someone, anyone, to save him from the mistakes he's made and set him aright again, whether it's in his faith, his relationships, or his life. | |
| Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
This song has a pretty bittersweet feel to it, which matches the title, "Melancholy Hill". The melody feels happy and cheered, but the rhythm and lyrics are very much on the other end of the spectrum, but do happen to dance across that line between incredibly sad and undeniably happy. "Up on melancholy hill There's a plastic tree Are you here with me Just looking out on the day Of another dream" What is Melancholy hill? It seems to be a place of our own creation, complete with a "plastic tree" that kinda acts as a safe haven. It's a place of old memories and friendship, and we just sit on the hill and look down to see all our dreams below, cascading over each other in a ripple of water, and wonder when those dreams come true. "Well you can't get what you want But you can get me So let's set up and see 'Cause you are my medicine When you're close to me When you're close to me" Life isn't perfect, and those dreams that she chases aren't all gonna come true. There will be other guys, and there will be heartbreak, but through it all, I'll be here, because I always feel better when she's there with me. "So call in the submarines 'Round the world we'll go Does anybody know If we're looking out on the day Of another dream" It's time to take a dip and dream, and when dreaming, we can go anywhere we want and do anything we want without limit. Naturally, though, with the border between life and dreams being so blurred, it's hard to tell whether or not we're looking at a dream or reality anymore. "If you can't get what you want Then you come with me" All she has to do, if she realizes that I'm here for her, is come along, and I'll take her wherever I go from then on. "Up on melancholy hill Sits a manatee Just looking off for the day When you're close to me When you're close to me When you're close to me" ... And I wake up, and that dream slips back into the waters below. You're not here with me, and I'm left alone with nothing but the melancholy in my heart as I realize that I lost you, or at least that I don't have you. To add a little to the description of this hill, I envision the first island from the music video with crystal-blue waters all around it. As the light hits the water, little scenes from my mind, or "dreams" flash by. I'm sitting on the edge of the island, looking down into the waters, dreaming. When the submarines come along, we jump in and take a dive, and soon, we start living our dreams as we explore around. That allows us to dream more, just adding to the wonder of the world around us. Surfacing is like waking up, and the dream dissolves as I land back on the island. What's my inspiration for this? Waking up every day. It's a pretty true story for me. While, when alone with me, she almost glows with a beaming smile and bright eyes, she doesn't realize that I'm stuck on Melancholy Hill, and if she'd only wake up from her dreams, she might realize that I'll always be here for her, and that I want her to be here for me, because "[she's] my medicine when [she's] close to me." I guess, though, I just have to look out for the day that dream can be lived for real. |

This song is simple, and a little bittersweet. The guitar in the verse really emphasizes that, and the harmonies and lyrics broken in strange places add to the effect. Even without hearing the lyrics, the song makes me simultaneously want to smile and cry. Reading the lyrics, the reason for this bittersweet tone is more apparent. This song has the double meaning about life being quick and doing what you want to before it ends, but also of the relationships and bonds you make being similar. The song almost follows the curve of a story. In the first verse, he says, "Cool kids never have the time," which means exactly what it says. Those kids out there who are too cool never have the time... but for what? "You and I should meet" is said right at the end of that verse, which contrasts with the cool kids. He is pulling in the subject of the song, trying to convince her to join him in doing what those cool kids have no time for. The next verse has that feel of looking ahead, with the headlights pointed at the dawn, but still not expecting the end to come. They don't really act like they're trying to live life to the fullest before it ends. "And I don't even care To shake these zipper blues And we don't know Just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed Into the earth below" The chorus here is repeated at the end, making it more significant than the others, so I look to it for the heart of the meaning. He doesn't care about the end, but he keeps it in mind. He doesn't sit around moping about the fact that it all will end one day. He just kinda shrugs the fact off and moves on to what he wants to do. The next verse has to do with having fun. He's double-crossing the vacant and the bored, showing them that he's more than just another soulless automaton. This chorus changes to we, showing that she's with him now. They're stuck in the gray city full of grief and guilt, but they still stayed their grounds... but there was pull, dragging them down faster than they thought, down to that city ground, below their hopes and dreams that were left in the clouds above. That innocence and hope was sucked out, probably in the process of growing up. The sad thing with growing up is that you tend to get separated from those who were closest to you when you were young. It's often accepted as part of the whole process. The next verse, he seems to run into her again. "Justine" was hanging out with the freaks and ghouls, or those who had their "life" sucked out of them. She had become one of them, but in that meeting, there were, "no apologies to be made," for this. He knows her better than that image that she puts off around the ghouls, and she's truly different from that. The first chorus is repeated, but with we this time, like the memories flooding back. Everything they had stood for growing up was forgotten until that moment, but, seeing each other, those ideals started sparking again. They once again leave that mindset of their adult selves. "The street heats the urgency of now" They're standing in the street, perhaps right before that dawn strikes, and these few moments that they can reunite are able to be cut off by a car at any time, so they must do everything they can in the short time. "As you see there's no one around" This could either literally mean that no one is around them, like they had found each other in the late hours of the night, bringing that dawn to a more literal prospect, too, or they could be alone in the sense that they're the only ones who see life how it really is, and who are really awake to what is best. Really, this is a great story, and could easily be applied to anyone, making the lyrics pretty universal. Remember to hold on to those who really mean a lot to you, and hold on to the positive beliefs and promises you've made to yourself, not letting yourself forget them when you need them most. |

| This is my favorite version of my favorite song. It's nice to have the complete lyrics throughout the song, instead of cutting out parts. | |

This song rings pretty true in my ears... while I do agree with the logic behind the pressure comment, I think it's a little closer to what others have been saying. A long while back, this girl and I got stuck as the lead parts in a highschool play production of Cinderella. She was the prettiest girl in the school, and everyone cheered me on due to it. She started to like me, and I was stuck between her and another girl that I had liked for years. queueing the song: So many fish there in the sea I wanted you, you wanted me (I developed some feelings for her, but alas) That's just a phase, it has to pass I was a train moving too fast (It was just because of the opprotunity, right? I'd just get through it and try to move on with life) Didn't understand what to see Yeah, then I got a different view It's you...no. (I didn't see much in dating her. The other girl had been my friend for ages and we knew a lot about each other...) Wait, I'm gonna give it a break I'm not your friend, I never was (I had only known her for a month, after all!) (I rejected her, and was shortly after rejected by the other. It figured...) So many fish there in the sea I wanted her, he wanted me (Relapse! Her boyfriend was ready to beat my face in after the play ended... she stopped liking me, and I realized I didn't.) That's just a phase, it's got to pass I was a train moving too fast (I made a pretty dumb decision back there. It's just a phase, I said. I was wrong!) (Who matters most to me now?) Yeah, I know you warned me But this is too important Now I got a different view It's you... (I plead for her to take me back, because I was dumb and didn't listen to what anyone said.) (The chorus takes a different meaning by now, as she's just about to move on entirely, and I plead for her to wait and let me prove my worth again. I can't handle just being your friend, because I'll never see you as mine.) She broke up with her old boyfriend, and is ready to just not date for a while. She's leaving friends, and I'm being left in the dust. This may be a similar story to pill88's but it's true as my own. It's kinda funny to think that the one girl who was everything I ever wanted liked me... and I rejected her. You can bet I'm kicking myself hard for it... Thank you if you read through this all. |
