This is a surprisingly clear political song, in my opinion. I wanna see some history, because now I've got a reasonable economy is indicating that life has become so miserable under Thatcher's "reasonable economy" that he wants to turn to communism, which always presented itself as a historical inevitability. He goes to a communist party meeting which shows a blatant propaganda movie (In sensurround sound on a 2 inch fim screen), but as he looks more closely he finds that East Berlin is even worse than anything he can imagine. The conclusion is not a utopian ideal (as the Clash sometimes fall into), but instead the ugliness of bad choices between the left and the right. |
