Pink Floyd – Mother Lyrics 13 years ago
Actually, is more related with Roger Waters's life. Most of the plot of The Wall is based on Roger's own experience, although they complement it with some of Syd's life to form a fictional character which is Pink from The Wall.

One of the beautiful and amazing details of this song and many other Tool songs is that they could be interpreted in so many ways, depending on the eyes/ears/mind that are exposed to the content.
Tool is one of those bands that attempt to stimulate the critical thinking in its audience.

I think this song is talking about a relationship.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not talking exclusively about a romantic relationship (which could be included) but as a struggle in a relationship that includes love.

An interaction between a guy that realizes that we live in shared consciousness, present and fate. The individual in this song has discovered the unity of every being (not talking exclusively about humans) with a consequential love.

Also I think that this song is like a conversation with him/self. At a deeper level, we are the ones that allow ourselves to suffer or enjoy, we are our toughest judges and we are those who decide whether we succeed or fail in achieving our goals and our emotional/spiritual realization.

I'm not sure if you nailed exactly the interpretation but I loved it. Great way to see it and the way I see it agrees in most of what you've just said.

Hello.
Ive seen that some people have commented that this song is about military and here is my opinion.
Maybe the military could be included here but I think it's focused on every corrupted institution and authority. Goverment, Church (any kind of powerful Church or cult), Military, Police, Secret Service, UN, Corporations, pretty much every big and powerful institution that doesn't reveal their methods and their objectives which use propagandistic and massive manipulation. In a summary, the belief and political-socioeconomical systems. People that have read or heard about one or more conspiracy theories may understand a little bit more. I'm not saying that each conspiracy is true but it's true that something is wrong with the world and just a few people are always safe and at the top of the pyramid.
"I'm not innocent, no one is innocent". Well, we all participate directly or indirectly in these ways of control. Most of us have accepted this as a reality even if we don't know or don't want to accept it, we buy their things, we vote for their candidates, some support some wars, we stay obedient even if we don't like to.
"I will no longer tolerate you, even if I must go down beside you" encourages to bring down this belief and fearful/blind obedience (not necessarily in a violent way).

I think that some of TOOL's songs want to cause a personal interpretation to it, so I don't think that any human relationship based on lies, control or manipulation could be included in the meaning of the song, too. A manipulative wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend/friend/parent/son/daughter/boss/etc. that any of us may be tolerating for a some time and we're not willing to keep tolerating the abuse and the lies, even it could be directed to the society or our own ego's, and somehow "I'm not innocent" because I have accepted this and "I will not tolerate you" anymore.

I'm not sure that this song is about what you're talking about, although is a nice way to see it.

I stay better with the idea of a martyrdom critic. It may sound like Jesus in a superficial way to see it but after listening and reading about Tool for a while, their message would never dare to say something like that. Maybe is related to the martyrdom in which we can fall or some other pseudo-leaders.

BTW Terrible thing to say, OCDemon.

I liked your interpretation, although I happen to agree more with Moiraine.

Nature is wise and some humans are and some aren't. Nature offers some plants or natural substances that may enhance or may not our perception and even our consciousness if they're used correctly (sometimes even without the will of use them as they should they can cause some positive effect on anyone).

The key word is IGNORANCE. Ignorance of the people that don't know and don't use any of those substances (natural or sinthetic), just as ignorance of the people that use them.

I think (this is not related to the song or maybe a little) that there's an unespecific path to reach a deeper level of awareness that may help to purify our lifestyles and our minds. This may be achieved with or without the use of any of these substances but they may turn this path a little easier for those who are willing to pay attention instead of using them only for recreation.

Nice, I firmly think that you nailed it. I was thinking something alike but I wasn't able to form the idea into words.

It seems that most of the people that want to give a meaning to the songs of Tool are thinking about sex or is the only way they can explain everything. Probably, theres something you should look up in yourself if every Tool song is telling you that.

In my opinion, I believe that this song is related with some sort of addiction or dependance. Addiction is not exclusive of drugs. A person may be addict to television, sex, people (have you ever been in a relationship without even enjoying it?), food or even a lifestyle.

I think that Tool is trying to describe this relationship between a human being with something he/she believes he/she needs. Not because it's useful or even joyful, but a routinary/boring/destructive habit, sometimes in a conscious and sometimes in a subconscious level.

The tale is about this need, about how deep your getting sucked up into this lifestyle, into these bad decisions, into this belief system (political, economical, religious, mediatic or even in a deeper and scarier level) and into this artificial world created by the system and by our confused/ignorant/distracted/misinformed free-will.

How much we most have to get sucked into this blindness/numbness before we realize how stubborn, erratic and arrogant we've become (unable to accept our mistaken perception/beliefs)?
How deep we most have to fall in order to get over this weakness/pride and break the vicious circle?
