I interpret the part about religion as alluding to how LGBT people tend to be castigated by the religious. I think the "A rainbow never smiles or blinks It's just a candy colored frown" is referring to the classical gay symbol. To me, the song isn't only about mortal despair. It is also about how LGBT people are denied freedom of sexual expression and are commonly not seen as enjoying 'genuine' happiness because they are considered to be indulging in simple perversions. So in other words, to me, it's a lamentation of the degradation of LGBT people as well as a more general reflection on what it means to live life and how you value life. |
