| White Lies – The Price of Love Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I like to think of it as a literal story. First scene takes place in person: ////"Don't lay a finger," I said, but he held her with five. Kissed the crest of her lips, and put his hand on her thigh. "One million in a week or the girl's gonna go." "I'd kill you in a second." He laughed, "Yeah, I know."//// End scene. That's when The Wife "gets taken". At this point, our protagonist is The Husband, threatening The Guy, dreading the fate of his beloved wife. ////I won eight hundred thousand on a game show, but it's not enough to win her back. As my tears hit the floor he still said, "No." "Come on man, give me some slack!" I looked at the case. He said, "I'll show you her blood." I screamed down the phone line, "So is this the price of love?"//// The Husband has won 800 000 on a game show! This here might well be the reason why (as we will soon find out) The Wife staged her own kidnapping instead of just leaving her husband for The Guy. Probably this was all The Guy's idea, though. The Guy's demanding a million, The Husband only has the 800 000 (which he probably delivers to The Guy at either this point, or at "I've done all I can." Possibly dropping 'the case' off at a location given by The Guy). The Guy threatens to kill The Wife, again. He'll show The Husband her blood after he's done with her, if The Husband doesn't get him the entire million. ////"When I stare in your eyes I see the image of God." "Well girl, listen out for the phone call and pray for a flood."//// A short exchange between The Wife and The Guy while they're waiting for the final call from The Husband. ////I called at a quarter past nine and said, "I've done all I can." He said, "You win some, you lose some. I feel bad for you man."//// The call arrives! Now The Husband has given all of his money to The Guy, desperate to get his wife back (I'm assuming he gets the money to The Guy, because otherwise this wouldn't make sense), but he's still not at a million and so it's over; The Guy will kill his wife. And now for the twist! ////He slammed down the phone and took his coat from the bed. She said, "What happens now?" "Well, to your husband you're dead." She said "I love you", and pleaded for her hero to stay, but knew deep inside that he'd planned it this way.//// Ooh!! The Wife was in on it!! Well, I already gave it away earlier. The protagonist is lost, we won't have him in 1st person anymore (though the narrative was pretty all-knowing even when we had him). Now, this is why I'm assuming The Guy got at least the 800 000, because why else would he be done and leave? He turns out to be a grade A asshole, leaving his partner in crime, opting to have all the money from himself. The Wife has fallen in love with him, but he seems to have been just using her to get to the money and she had feared that. ////("I gave him my heart. Now he's left it to die, and I know I can't go back.")//// First person! This is a thought in The Wife's mind when she realises she was right in her suspicion, the asshole was just using her. She fell in love with The Guy, most probably doesn't love his husband anymore (if she ever loved him) and The Husband also thinks her dead, so she cannot/doesn't even want to return to her old life. ////He walked out the room shouted, "See you around!" She begged, "Come on, give me some slack!" He said, "There's no hope, but babe you can wait for that dove." She screamed from the window, "So is this the price of love?"//// The Guy's leaving her with nothing, The Wife begs him not to, The Guy references his earlier quip about the flood and leaves her screaming from a window. |

I've always thought of this song as literally about someone dying of the plague. Like a story with no hidden meanings. I guess I have no imagination. According to the internet Owen has stated that, "The song is about a Black Plague victim trying to convince his lover to come out and die with him." But I don't know about the source, so. I can see that, though. The first verse is pretty straightforward. The fever came; he's dying. So the narrator (let's say a he because what the fuck does it matter) wants his lover there with him. To die with him. "Set fire to foundation and burn out the station You'll never get nothing of mine" To burn with him. Because that's what happens to plague victims. And that way, you know, they'll be together forever and he doesn't want his lover to move on. The "I'll sing of.." bit is referring to the question "what melody", so he's trying to convince his lover to come and die with him, by song, because that is what you do in a song. Beating on his drum 'til his dead; convincing. He's singing about things that will make his lover feel guilty about abandoning him, because basically, the narrator is a really swell guy. Seriously though, it's a sad song. And I know nothing. |

"Red sky turning round Black rain falling down" I'm thinking Operation Desert Storm? The burning oil fields are what come to mind from those lines. Might be just me. |
