Devics – Come Up Lyrics 13 years ago
It's about a friend who drowned herself, either from depression or heartbreak or both.

The first verse is the narrator reflecting on the things her friend said. Was she signalling her impending suicide? "There's too many angels here." "All my other friends and loved ones are dead." (already gone, too early). Nobody knows why people take their own lives. But their words stay with us as we hunt for the meaning we believe must have been there ("Whatever you mean, it came to mind and I realized that it's all fake...")

But the narrator chooses life, even if it has its ebbs and flows, its ups and downs, like the waves.

The second verse is more focused on the narrator. She's a singer - "it's at the shows, I feel so alive" - and she understands the pain of everyday existence (life seems dull and ordinary when not on stage). This is particularly poignant as this was Devics' last album before calling it quits and moving back to a more ordinary life.

The narrator addresses her dead, and thus silent, friend - "You've not many words, but what are they for?" - and thinking of her and her silent, dead judgment. "You see through me, you make me quiet".

The narrator closes by commenting on the pointlessness of the suicide by drowning. "You run and hide, duck under the waves...what's there to greet you? Water and sand and fish all around you."

The entire time, she is still calling to her friend, wishing she would return. "Come up, come up..."
