Above is the only plausible explanation. The speaker is not pontificating about God or recovery or relationships with some kind of identifiable message. I think he's realized dead or alive he's free: "I saw my head laughing, rolling on the ground", though this freedom will only allow him to find a "new illusion", which will bind him again. As mentioned above, I think it's about life's absurdity and its fluctuations from freedom (doing what you want to do) to bondage (doing what you have to do to fix the past ("yesterday's cloud") or to prepare for the future). |

Of course it's about the music, but considering Lou is one of rock's best lyricists, and these are some of his best images, I think if you tried listening closely and seeing the scene sets, you'd have to agree the lyrics are far from throwaway. |

There is an incorrect lyric here.
The copy-pasta lyric here incorrectly reads:
"The night was cool. It was around the time that the bad ladies come out
While river rats broke windows and performed un-natural acts."
The correct ending lyric is "While river rats broke windows and performed a natural act" i.e. sex, as in, "it was nighttime and we came upon rats that were copulating in the privacy of darkness". quite the opposite of "un-natural acts". |

Let's not forget the archetype of the hero going to the forest to face roaring rivers, monsters, snakes, and, finally, to slay the dragon before returning home as savior of the village (as Joseph Campbell expounds upon). This also could entail finding enlightenment in the "desert" and returning home with the knowledge to save his community. Most stories loosely follow this pattern, like Jesus' Transfiguration or Forrest Gump committing to shrimping in Vietnam. So, yeah, Avey's kinda saying: "go to the woods and trip to find yourself, and come back with real experience that could raise your consciousness, as opposed to the mess that is material society, which can only bring misleading pleasure if that". |
