| My biggest confusion is regarding the 'yellow bonnets". I read an earlier comment mentioning yellow bonnets on the trees as a memorial for a soldier at war, but I've always heard it termed as a yellow ribbon, and the only potentially relevant definitions I could find were regarding hats. I think it could be a reference to the the Scotch Bonnet type of chili pepper, which can range in color from yellow to scarlet when ripe, and it makes sense that they would "garland all the lawn" after having fallen from their bush. It also continues the theme of describing aspects of nature (wrens, thrushes, cardinals, jasmine vining up arbors, etc.) The only strange part about this is why they would be growing this exceptionally hot chili pepper in a region that doesn't typically use that in their cuisine (Portland, OR). | |
