Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh had the same thought:

I don't think the meaning is as specific as some commenters do. I think it's simply telling us to live an authentic life with meaning and depth, not just a life with a shiny veneer. |

When we saw them in concert, they played footage of helicopters in combat over Viet Nam on the screen. If you think of "The Sandman" as the code name for a pilot, then the rest of the song sort of falls into place. |
