Good comment, but I wouldn't limit the psychology references to just this album. Lateralus is so full of it too, especially the song "Reflection". You're definitely right though! |

to me it's obvious that this song is about he's childhood. Like someone mentioned they were inspired about the book where the wild things are which makes sense because that wasnt so much a kids book, but about a kid and they probably saw a lot of themselves in that kid.
That this is all in hindsight of his childhood...the divorce of his parents, the darkness he found in himself...problems practical every kid faces but they dont understand at the time. |

I'm sure you all know about this song's connection Fibonacci's Spiral which is a geometrical sequence that is found everywhere, even in our own dna...the rhythmic pattern of this song is the Fibonacci sequence.
Now that being said you have to look deeper into what that can mean, well when graphed the sequence is a spiral and clearly tool knows that and the significance of the spiral because of the lyrics "spiral out" and "ride the spiral to the end, we may just go where no one's been"
The song, in my opinion, has 3 different moods...the first mood would be the first few minutes of the song (the early verse and chorus) which i would describe as "all over the place" i interpret it as confusion, the lyrics seem to follow. Lyrics are him trying to figure what all this over thinking and need to look deeper is all about.
The next mood being the "breakdown" with the lyrics "I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow, to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the mountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human." this part is very calming and quite, but probably the most significant part of the song...it's the realization of it all...his touching the divine and ti's wonderful....
But then, the last mood and the ending, brings it right back down to earth so to speak...it gets "heavy" and almost dark sounding also corresponding with the lyrics "with my feet upon the ground, i lose myself between the sound" pretty much saying that it's hard to undersand and remember what he previously stated because of all the distractions ("noises") in our physical world and he can feel it...he can feel how close he is and he's trying so hard to touch it, reaching as far as the world will allow him...so he just has to ride the spiral until the end and hopefully be where no one's been...
this song is about about realizing that the human race is capable of a lot more than we think. That world/universe is ours and not something we should be afraid of, we were put here to embrace it and not cower from it. So love the physical world for all we were given, but also realize that it's not all we have and don't get caught up in all this manufactured petty bullshit that society is feeding us!!
Hope this helped someone better understand the song and the world!! Remember, KEEP CALM AND SPIRAL OUT! :) |

i'm pretty sure this song is about society and how EVERY SINGLE member of society goes through the same routine in becoming the "modern man" we all wait on line to just sit behind a desk at a bullshit job knowing very well that our lives could have gone very differently if we had the choice to but we dont. We all go to school and expect to graduate at age 18 just to go to more schooling for at least 4 years and then we're all suppose to get a great job, get married, have kids and die... |

when i her this song it makes me think of the sad life of the city...it really is just sitting in your studio apartment staring at a tv thinking of nothing...also there's definitely a lot of metaphors in here about death and the pointlessness of life which isaac brock talks about repetitively |

i think this whole song is the concept of "Cowboy Dan" just a regular old American who goes through the same complexes as everyone else...being pissed off with being unsatisfied in life which drives everyone to drink themselves to death...blames it on the native americans at the reservation, blames it on god, blames it on the world.....main support is the line "i got mine but i want more" or "i want out desperately but i cant get that engine to turn over" just being frustrated with everything in life "even if sober" |

I think this song ties a lot of things together....like i think it has evidence of psychedelic drug use with the whole "slipping into a dream within dreaming" is definitely trip language, also the sweating and staring and thinking totally reminds me of tripping balls. But also think he's talking about during a trip or some sort of psychedelic experience when you realize that society is just repeating itself, where you'll become your father because it seems so familiar because you feel the oneness with everything else that has been there before...you just get such a familiar feeling...anyone who's done shrooms knows what im talking about :) |

whenever i thought of the meaning to this song as always pictured him talking about his mom (or just authority figure in one's life) and how parents are always trying to push ideals and beliefs on their children instead of letting them decide for themselves.
Lyrics like "I will choke until i swallow"
you'll punish me until i accept your beliefs
"You still love me and you push it on me."
idk! just what i think. but like every tool song, too many meanings! lol |

i definitely think you're on the right track! i think it's about his confusion and wanting to do "wrong" in the eyes of religion so he just will ignore the religion so he could do whatever he wants. I honestly think the lyric is "when i fly so low, i fly so high" as if he's flying closer to the ground, further away from god or heaven. |

this is definitely talking about the story from greek mythology where the king can't cross the river styx into the afterlife and he is clueless to why...really can be looked at as any challenge of wisdom or willpower in life...because you can be the strongest, but you're nothing if you're stupid. |
