I just happened to stumble upon this song a few days ago, and I LOVE it! As I was listening to it again today and analyzing the lyrics, I found a possible meaning behind this song. I think the religious undertones about death and going to heaven or hell are pretty evident, but I think it's complicated to the singer/speaker. He strives to be a good person and to be forgiven for his sins in hopes of getting in heaven. The song is an epiphany of sorts; he realizes that he can aspire to get to heaven as much as he wants, but that isn't the fate he is meant for. It's akin to the idiom that, like a leopard, "you can't change your spots." The speaker has committed sins that, regardless of how much or how often he tries to turn a new leaf and seek redemption he will never achieve it. Neverless, for as "hopeless" as he feels about his fate, his still hopes that when he "knocks" at heaven's door that somebody that cares is there. |
