| The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang Lyrics | 13 years ago |

I think this song is about living in America. The real give away line for me is sung by Alex "In a dream I had, oh in a dream I had". I think this song refers to the "American Dream" and how Americans grow up with it but few make it to the top. So despite just about all Americans owning cars, those who don't make are left feeling that they've been cut to ribbons, despite having been taught to drive. As a patriotic youngster full of hope the singer had the country's name tatooed inside his arm before he grew up to feel let down. I agree that the reference to calling for his father who has died is a reference to the founding fathers whose guidance is no longer available. So the richer men gather more "fortunes" whilst those who don't make it are left with gallows on which to hang-not literally, I think Brian is just saying these people feel abandoned. OK, I am from the UK, so you can all tell me I don't know what I'm talking about if you like, but this is what the song is saying to me. This is a common theme of many of Bruce's songs and we know the regard Brian has for Bruce. I also think that despite these guys realising that their country is flawed, they still have a love for their country-they just want to make it better. And by the way, I am a confirmed Yankofile, I love the USA and its people. TGA are my favourite band at the moment, their music speaks to me like no other band's music does. |
