I think it this is a clever use of metaphor to disguise a very obviously personal situation--the dissolution of the Martin/Paltrow marriage. He was on top of the world when they met and ended up a "puppet on a lonely string." The marriage was apparently a sham for a long long time. The church bells and the choir and the corresponding excitement and optimism of that part of the song are the wedding. The revolutionaries who get his head on a platter for their amusement are the children. And now he only feels good enough to entertain them like a puppet and clean the floors in the home he used to own. They won't be marching into heaven after all, if Saint Peter has anything to do with it. |
