Tom Petty – The Last DJ Lyrics 13 years ago
I love the message this song provides. It's a remaining veteran from the golden days of music speaking against this mindless corporate machine that is the modern music industry. I wouldn't link it directly to satellite radio, but no doubt that's a part of it. Back in the day music was a way to express your feelings and deliver messages. But as the mid-1990's came around, this all went up in a fiery ball of wreckage. Even thought the song doesn't say it, we have MTV to blame. Now music is a way for people to make money. It's a tool for corporate men (the boys upstairs) to thrive off stupidity. And as we celebrate mediocrity, fakers call themselves singers, but they put shame to the word. They hide themselves behind disguises such as auto-tune and far overused collaborations. The worst offenders? Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, and Ke$ha. I mean just look at those poser names! Petty puts modern followers to shame. Hats off to a remaining legend.

Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you
Now you got someone to blame

For me this is Bono or the main character asking his former loved one how they are doing, sounding caring, and then criticizing her for blaming him for what happened.

You say
One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
It's one love
We get to share it
It leaves you baby
If you don't care for it

Here he talks about how if you don't put in an effort, love will leave you.

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without

Bono asks his former loved one if he didn't suit her, if he just didn't feel right for her. Then he accuses her of being inexperienced with love and possibly sabotaging him trying to get a new relationship after theirs.

Well it's too late
Tonight
To drag the past out
Into the light

Now he's saying she can no longer use what happened in their past to use against him, and that the past is the past, they have new issues to deal with.

We're one
But we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
One

He points out how they might've been together, but they never truly had anything.

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

He now sees she's come back to him, trying to rekindle the relationship. When he says "Have you come to raise the dead" that is her trying to bring back their "dead" relationship. She tries to heal their sick status. It is represented by Jesus healing lepers (sick people).

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got

Bono has responded by asking if what he did (apparently HE did something) was so bad. But then he says the little she gave him is all he has left.

We're one
But we're not the same
We hurt each other
Then we do it again
