| Brian Wilson – On A Holiday Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Thematically, the song carries on the overarching concept of the album as an imaginary/metaphorical journey across America, and thorugh American history, from east to west, Plymouth Rock to Hawaii. LIke all Van Dyke's lyrics, it's full of complex allusions, puns and wordplay, like the double meanings in "a roundelay" ("around a lei"), shanty/chanty, Port, away/a-weigh, "ukelele lady", etc. The specific reference in the last verse is to Liliuokalani, the last queen of Hawaii, who was also an accomplished musician and composer and is credited with composing the famous song "Aloha Oe" ("Farewell to Thee"). |
