Interpol – Memory Serves Lyrics 13 years ago
I think Success is about an adultary relation and that this song follows it.
His wife discovered his treatchery and he is supposed to have ended his relationship with the other woman, but he’s unable to do so, so they keep on seeing but only at her place not to be seen (« It would be so nice to take you » out ?). His lover knows he has cheated on her too(« I only lied to make you smile ») and she can’t keep on like that so she ends it up and it’s their last night together. He doesn’t want to think about it so he remembers a special memory from the time they were fine together.
At the end, he clings to his hope and tries to convince her to see him again that way « you don’t have to say that you’d love to, but baby please that you’d want to someday ».

Interpol – Success Lyrics 13 years ago
I've always thought this song was about some hidden thing that carries a threat (the way he says "good try, I'm a good guy" as if trying to persuade the person). To me it also carries some kind of emergency, as if he wants to reveal his secrets but is bond not to.
Well, I heard this album is about ends of relations, and listening to this song the other day I thought it could be about adultery: A man, maybe in his forties with a classical crisis due to his age. He begins to thing that he's advancing in age and His life is flying too fast (« dreams of long life »), he’s afraid of aging. So he’s got this urge to go to see elsewhere and succumb to his impulse (« If the sea was that strong Maybe we had to fly » (« somebody made me say no, no, no, yes »).
He tries and seduce another woman but he feels remorse and shame (« I’m a good man » « I’ll learn to bury most beliefs ») maybe he’s got feeling for her and he’s torn between keeping silent or telling her the truth ( that he’s married).
For his secrets… Maybe he’s ill (« I have succeeded, I won’t compete for long » and maybe that’s part of the reason he committed adultary), and the second is his wife.

Interpol – Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down Lyrics 13 years ago
To me Stella is mental. She had a love affair with the narrative and had sex for the first time with him. She loved it but at the same time her lust felt wrong as if she felt she did something dirty and she's ashamed of taking pleasure in it ( "… sex toy, love-joy diver"). As she dived in her lust, she dived into her madness and she thought people judged her ("She knows there's people watching"), she's getting paranoid. And at some point she lost it, she felt too oppressed (" the sea was so To me Stella is mental. She had a love affair with the narrative and had sex for the first time with him. As she dived in her lust, she dived into her madness and she thought people judged her ("She knows there's people watching"), she's getting paranoid. And at some point she lost it, she felt too oppressed (" the sea was so airtight") and dived into that madness represented by the sea. She lives in another world with hallucinations (And fat blue serpent swells »).
« He realises that the more she enjoys sex with him, the more she loses her mind (« To me Stella is mental. She had a love affair with the narrative and had sex for the first time with him. « He realises that the more she enjoys sex with him, the more she loses her mind (« Well, she was my catatonic sex toy, love drug diver »).
And he’s desperate because he loves her and he knows that he’s lost her in a way and that her madness declared because of their relation.
