First and formost, please allow me to correct a miss perception about Alchemy. The above statement "' Alchemy is a 'science' (supposedly) that is famous for getting nowhere and being completely pointless." Could not be more incorrect. Alchemy is actually the foundation of modern day Chemistry. IN fact, the word Chemistry comes directly from the word Alchemy. Look it up. Also, FYI, Sir Issac Newton, The creator of the science of Physics, and definer of the laws of said physics, was an Alchemist... So to say Alchemy never went anywhere or being completely pointless, Is just flat out not true. We got chemistry and Physics out of it, so I'd say , went somewhere and made a damn good point. Now to MY interpretation of Mr Fallon brilliant lyrics. I would absolutely agree this song is at least inspired by The Hadron superconducting/super collide, and the search for the Higgs/Bosin or "God" particle. It seems clear to me Mr Fallon is comparing the modern day search for this subatomic mystery particle to the Alchemist search for the Philosophers stone, which one could use to turn lead into Gold. Which, to my knowledge, no Alchemist ever found or achieved. And since that was the main goal of the Alchemist, this would be why its said to have been a joke, was pointless, and didn't go anywhere. Now, to title of the song, Djinn and Pentatonic...... I believe is a reference to super-string theory which many in the scientific don't consider a true science, simply we cannot make direct observation of these vibrating strings of energy. So most of Quantum Mechanics denounce Super-string theory. BTW, Quantum Mechanics was the 50's......Einstein could not wrap his mind around it, Simply because the laws of Physic that Newton and Einstein defined break down and do not apply. Which brings me to the line "one has to wonder, are we in, or are we out?" I believe this the question the guys at Cern are asking themselves every time they fire up the Hadron, As they cross there fingers, smash subatomic particles together at damn near the speed of light in search for the god particle. Regardless of the songs meaning....It rocks ass. It could mean nothing, and I'd still love it. All Night Long...... |
