Pink Floyd – Vera Lyrics 13 years ago
I have a deluxe DVD of The Wall and in it Roger Waters said that the director and the animator would often asked him "What is this song fucking about?" and he would reply sometimes "I don't really know." This might've been one of those songs. The Wall was only semi-autobiographriful, much of the descent into madness was about Syd Barret. I think Vera Lynn's "We'll meet again" was an obvious connection to the loss he felt of never knowing his dad who died at Anzio in the war...Since Vera Lynn was very popular during the war and this song is about the soldiers going off to war and her trying to reassure them that they would meet again some sunny day that this is a connection to the fact that he never really met his father at all. It may not only be mourning the loss of his father but empathy for anyone who lost somebody at some point in their lives. And since at this point Pink is totally within the wall he has constructed for himself he is actually reaching out to anybody that could help him - a cry for help if you will. The vocal is so saturated with emotion it is impossible to not feel something when you hear it. It's brilliant. "Vera, Vera, what has become of you? Does anybody else in here feel the way I do?" Remeber The Wall is actually set at a concert and represents the distance he began to feel with the audience at these huge arena shows which were not a lot of fun to play. They became events and happenings and like The Beatles felt no one is reallyt listening to us anymore...what's the point? Maybe he knows some Russian and that his wife's infidelity stikes a chord with Vera meaning faith in Russian...who knows but Roger Waters?
