Most of Norah Jones' song lyrics are easy to grasp but this one eluded me for a long time. It's probably the most obscure of her song texts. I always loved the melancholy in it. Like after waking up from a dream, and I know that there was a whole long story, romantic, tragic, whatever, and I just can't remember any details, just the feeling remains... Today I heard it again (the live version from a New York concert, you can find it on youtube) and I think I know now what it is about: she was in love with someone and they spent time together but he never knew she loved him and she did't tell hime either: Meanwhile inside of me it was rainin' storms, hm, You didn't know, hm God bless your soul Maybe he was married, maybe there was some other reason they couldn't be together. She blesses his soul because he is so innocent about what she feels, how much she wants him. It's like a show was over But we're too scared to walk away All for the better Worst for the way This is about how they part ways, I think, herself being totally clear about her feelings, the other one ignorant. She knows it's better this way, they can't really be together, but they way ahead is going to be sorrowful for her. What about "light as a feather", title and refrain line? I can only guess, but I think the whole song is about letting go. There is something/someone you just can't have and you must feel "light as a feather" to let it go... even if your heart feels "heave as the weahther". |
