I definitely agree with your second interpretation. The entire album is all so one-sided, the singer keeps talking about how the girl will never love him back because she's in love with a "stone". It seems like this is him fantasizing about finally having her, and of course the best case scenario for him is that they've killed her lover together, and now "you're no one's but mine". There's nothing in the rest of the album to suggest her feelings have changed, so it makes more sense to me that this is his fantasy. |

I think this is a song about working hard (obviously) in a relationship, doing the best you can to move forward despite your faults, and accepting responsibility for your mistakes. It's also related to America as a whole- we have a lot of problems and we have to work to overcome them. It seems like a couple of songs on this album have the same dual meaning- Big Wave has the same ties between personal life, and the state of the nation. |

I'm pretty sure it is "Cause that's a dealbreaker" rather than "cause that's the deal with it". Also pretty sure it's "You'll go away" rather than "You're gone away".
Besides that I think this song could definitely be interpreted as a romantic challenge like Auberyn says, but I always thought of it as a song of encouragement to someone who's down and out. The singer is being brutally honest to a friend or significant other, who is feeling ready to give up, saying she knows they're tough enough, and challenging to fix their situation even though things look bleak.
This might be just the way I'm taking it though, haha |
