This song is about being a touring musician. As one myself, I know several of the feelings he is describing first hand. The first verse describes how you can feel a lot of the time- beat down, tired, and weary, but still having the time of your life- "film the whole thing". Nearly every morning starts with a large cup of strong coffee. As the day progresses, you feel it slowly start to leave your body. I had one particular tour that was a little too long where I nearly lost my mind, and had a course of actions that changed my life forever. I feel like something similar may have happened to Dan. "The gas (or cost?) is more than you get payed" Sometimes, you aren't making nearly enough money to sustain yourself, but you have no real choice but to continue and hope things get better. "Escape can't be the only way to escape" I feel like a lot of people have these preconceived notion that their life will get better if they just "skip town" and get away from everything. But, problems need to be solved internally. Trust me, any touring musician can relate to this song. It's usually the time of your life, but it definitely isn't easy. |
