I understand how you can see him as searching for another explanation, and I agree with you, to an extent. I have ADD, so I understand the way he feels. This is what I've reasoned:
He has experienced the symptoms of ADD his whole life, and has been told such with some frequency. All of the doctors, psychologists, and others who've been examining him have declared him ADD.
However, this diagnosis doesn't help. Trust me, having a name for your problem doesn't help you at all. The doc even put me on medication for my ADD, but I still struggle to make sense to others.
Many people believe that being smart is a gift. This is true, but I've discovered that there comes a certain point where you're so smart and you think so fast, that few others can keep up with you. It happens to me all the time. I'll be off on some tangent, sixteen logical steps away, while they're still processing the baseline thought. It's frustrating, to say the least.
Like I was saying, being smart, above a certain point, merely alienates you from the rest of the people your age. It's like being a Prodigy Nascar driver when you're sixteen. Everybody else is just passing Drivers' Ed, and there's no competition. What often happens is people just let their minds shut down. They go into a state of apathy and hibernation, because to have their minds online all the time would induce a weird combination of madness and dissociation.

Sorry if this was too long-winded for it to make sense, but I hope it helps you to understand.

I have ADD, as well as Aspergers Syndrome and I'd say that everything you've said is true. Your opinions must be well-informed. I experience the emotions he's feeling on a daily basis.
