I interpret this song as being closely linked to thoughts about religion. "Place ash on their forehead" probably refers to the Christian practice performed during Ash Wednesday. "Born-Again before teething" sounds like baptising a child, to me, only the song's music makes it all sound dark. "Hiding under the seafoam, package them like a cheap gift," sounds like the moment when the singer's true feelings about this are revealed. I think it refers to the thousands and thousands of people being taught a belief without them choosing it-- something the singer does not approve of. "Adolecent fiancee"-- although fiancee means being engaged to someone, it can also translate to "being given away to someone" at an early age. "I'm just flesh to give away"-- "I'm just a number," or a pawn. To 'them', whoever they are, the singer feels as if they're not even perceived as a person, but as a tool. |

I really like this song, because it's the only one (I think) which focuses exclusively on the Hulk. Banner's character has a lot of emotion bottled up, enough to spawn hundreds of songs, but he keep most of it to himself. I loved how this song expresses exactly what I imagined he was feeling. The first stanza pretty much speaks for itself: everybody's walking on eggshells around him, thinking him a monster, and he hates it. Mostly because he considers himself a monster too. But he's also angry, because he was trying to be good, all this time. And they "dragged him back into the freak show." He's kind of indignant here. You really realize it's about the Hulk with the "even if I could" part, because he can't die. Next stanza is even angrier. He's resentful at everything, and he feels like he's just trapped inside this little box all the time, and can't let himself out. He knows he's stuck in this forever. At least, that's how I interpreted it. This is the one part I didn't get entirely. And the "you know I can never forgive you"? I suppose, in a way, he's talking to himself. Or to the Other Guy. The one person Bruce truly hates is himself. At least, this is the most logical answer to me. But this is just my interpretation, of course. I love this song (one of the best in the soundtrack), and the Avengers is my favorite movie, ever. |
