Kevin Devine – Private First Class Lyrics 12 years ago
When he sings this live, he changes all the "he's" into "she's". It's about Chelsea Manning.

The Wonder Years – I Just Want to Sell Out My Funeral Lyrics 12 years ago
To be fair, they've been doing concept albums since The Upsides.

But yeah, they use all the lyrics from the other songs on the album to get across a central theme, and while I think it's done pretty well, it might be a little too long.

Still mad cool.

The Wonder Years – Dismantling Summer Lyrics 12 years ago
I wonder if it's at all a reference to Constructive Summer by The Hold Steady. Sort of opposite song titles and all.

The Gaslight Anthem – Wherefore Art Thou, Elvis? Lyrics 12 years ago
Reminds me a lot of Lady Macbeth if anything. Out out damn spot and whatnot.

It's definitely something that's been done before though.

Bad Books – Pyotr Lyrics 13 years ago
Andy talked about the meaning of this one when he played it at a show I went to during the summer. Apparently it's about a Russian czar who found out his wife had taken a lover, so he cut off the lover's head and put it on display in their foyer. The song is a back and forth perspective between the czar and the head.

The Hold Steady – Multitude of Casualties Lyrics 13 years ago
"We were trying for a vision quest we opened up three buttons
And all we saw was desert trash"

A reference to Cattle and the Creeping Things, Holly wears a cross that shows when she opens three buttons on her shirt. The desert trash is the cross.
