Slaves – Who Saves The Savior? (feat. Spencer Chamberlain) Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about attempting suicide and dying. Seems that the POV is waiting for their "god" to appear at death but is also seeing visions of hell ("spin around the fire") and demons ("strangers dressed in black") as they die ("no turning back/dance above the stage").

Thrice – At The Last Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow, you really think he went over the top with spiritually? I think he has written WAY more over the top songs in that sense. Well that's your opinion. Cool.

It sounds to me like this song is about a man in the afterlife standing and looking back while being judged and he thought what he had done was fine, nothing wrong that was to big or drastic, just small things that no one cares about in his opinion. But does it really matter in the end? Sin is sin. All the stuff he had worked to accomplish and acquired now means nothing whether it was material or not. He is dead and gone and no one cares anymore. The world had moved on and left his memory behind. He thought he had lived a good life, but now looking back he is filled with regret and feels he actually wasted his life on quests for things that didn't really matter.

I don't consider myself religious very much anymore but I understand religions and this song makes sense to me in that sense in the Christian faith. Anyone else get that from this?

Dustin Kensrue – Please Come Home Lyrics 19 years ago
Most beautiful song on the enire album. I am not 100% clear on the meaning but it sounds as if it is about a fathers undying love for his son. Sounds like when the son left he said the cliche things like "I hate you" and all that while walking out the door and now the son hit a rough point in his life and feels too ashamed to come back and face his father and tell him that he failed and his father was right all along.

Lets try and discuss the songs meaning instead og being "the new ambums so amazing" or "dustin is the bestsestesttest" or even the inventible "Thirce is so much better" bullshit. Where for the song, not for how cool or uncool you think this shit is. I'm sure there is a message board somewhere else for that. Thanks.

I love how epic the feel of this song is. To me it sounds like they have some insecurities about there lives and where they are at and maybe they seem like they are stuck at a certain point in their lives and are trying to break the routine and make a change in something. I don't know. To me it also seem like they are searching for some sort of inner peace and worldly things are not bringing them what they are looking for and maybe it is something unworldly, maybe even spiritually. I don't what do you all think?

Yellowcard – Two Weeks From Twenty Lyrics 20 years ago
"All he had was a line for his name
So he could sign away his right to be proud"

What the fuck does this mean? Are they saying there is no pride in fighting for your country? If so, they are totally fucked and I hope they get drafted, sent to the front lines and fucking slaughtered. You know I used to have respect for Yellowcard. Then they put out Ocean Avenue. Then, last week I picked up my new AP from the mailbox and there is an article about how they are trying to get away from the teeny bopper image and put out some material with some decent content. I say, "okay, I'll give it a shot." I get my advance copy and there is this bullshit on here! They rest of the record sounds pretty good, but this is totally fucked and I lost all respect for them once again. What about this:

"And there's still no shame
From the man to blame"

Is he talking about George Bush? I really don't care if they can like him or not, but it's pretty lame to call out this shit nationally when your band really doesn't even have a fan base that's even close to being able to vote. (And if you have something to say to try and talk shit to me about ol' W, I don't even want hear it unless YOU ACTUALLY VOTED IN THE LAST ELECTION!!!! Besides, I am sure you are not even at the intellectual level to be touting your beliefs all over the internet anyway.)

Basically, I don't see eye to eye with the Commander in Chief (that's the president you dumb fucks) but the fact is that he had his shit together better than Kerry in my eyes, so I took the lesser of two evils. As far as the fucking war goes, I have 100% support for the man and the troops. Personally I am happy we took Iraq, it's not like they were doing anything positive anyway over there so why not take em over? Good.

As far as this song goes; these are to conclusions I draw from it.

#1 - Yellowcard tried to put out a decent album, but tried to cross into a debate that was far over the heads of their fan base and ended up looking like a bunch of naïve, pussy bastards who have had everything handed to them on a silver platter their entire lives. Yay for them!

#2 – Yes there is a war happening, and no it’s not going to stop soon, so all your little MySpace bulletins, protests, and marches are not going to accomplish shit.

#3 – These people who are “two weeks from twenty” are putting there lives on the line (and sometimes losing them) for you so you can sit right there at your computer bitching about something you really have no fucking idea about!

Now I am pissed so I am going to quit writing. If you disagree with me good, that’s what our troops are over there fighting to make sure you will be able to do for years to come. Appreciate what you have, and what the president it fighting to maintain. Fuck face.

Just so you know:

I don’t have a problem with abortion, I think a girl should have a right to chose (and chose to go to hell) if she wants.

I don’t have a problem with gay people. (Let that fags marry, it’s not going to affect me in any negative way)

I am way too cool for you. HA! Joking

Corrections:

"This is still my life
Not yours to Defy"

Anyone in their right mind would never let you inside
Anyone in their right mind
I've broken ties with the neighborhood
I'm feeling like a bum in the city
waking only to take a drink
From an empty glass
Of nothing good
And sinking like a stone in the sea
without the oxygen i need"

I believe it has something to do with struggling between worldly desires and human impulses (lust, greed, yada yada) I also thinks it talks a little about Satan and all those temptation thingys that he throws out there (mini-skirts, low cut shirts, and so on) while talking about how when you fall from God you often deny him "That so proudly puts to death
My own fathers name." Kind of falling in to the firey pits of hell that smell of sulfur so he is trying not to breathe in cause he knows he can pull out of it and back in to the glorious light.

I know that some hater will come along though and say, quote: "Why do you stupid people always think its about God, it is about a Girl! I am so tired of Jesus this and God that." Just watch. In fact, its probably gonna be you. Well I think the song is about christianity and if you don't think so, good. I hope you get something else out of the some. If we all wanted to know EXACTLY what a song meant we would all be listing to Limp Bizkit. I gotta go get some Nookie now....

Emery – Playing With Fire Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it is about a person who is forced to decide between two people. He feels she is not choosing him so he is angry but left with questions "why not me? Why him?" She says tells him that he was a mistake and that she regrets being with him, however he doesn't have any regrets. He might have forgave her for all he mistakes but she can't ever forgive him for anything.

I don't really know. This is what I am getting so far from the song. There might be a religious side too but people on here freak out if the G or J words are ever mentioned in songs that they enjoy.

Jesuphobes.

Emery – The Ponytail Parade Lyrics 20 years ago
This is creepy. Wow, getting some chills. Been here...

I think it is about a girl who left a guy. He thought every was going great and then she just up and left him. Now he is struggling to move on and he can't fight the feelings he has for her. He thought she felt the same way he did about their love when she said it would be forever, and that they would always be together. As it turns out she didn't feel that way (she lied, sorry ladies) and now he is left with nothing. He never planned anything outside of a life with her and now that she is gone all he has is emptiness.

This line verse:

"It scares me to think that you could find takers
other than me and better than me
but your head is elsewhere
and I'm talking enough for both of us
when will you see it's not so easy for me"

shows that she doesn't have any problem moving on, even rubbing her new love in his face at times. He is forcing himself to find closure with this

"walk away from me
this night is done"

Ok so, if you have been following Dashboard for 3 or so years like me, then you are a big fan of the solo stuff, however this song is damn good. If you DO like the solo stuff from Dashboard more than the new full band sound then check out this band called Onlinedrawing. The singer's name is Jonah. It's just him and a drum machine (however now he uses an iPod with backgrond sounds from the drum machine that he recorded on to it) and his live shows are nothing short of amazing. At a Onlinedrawing show you pretty much have a revelation to say the least. Everthing becomes clear and makes sense. Check him out by downloading a song, I recommend:

To me it sounds like Jonah is just tired of all the crap in the world. When you look at the big picture of everything happening around the world your out look becomes dark. You feel so helpless and wonder "whats the point? What can I do to change it?" But, when you bring it down to the small picture and look at, for example, your group of friends (For Jonah its crowds) and you think about all the good times you have when your with them your life feels like it has meaning and purpose and that alone sometimes is what gets me through the day.

Thrice – The Artist in the Ambulance Lyrics 21 years ago
I picked up a copy of Burn Collector after Thrice released this album and I must say I was blown away. Al Burian is a great writer, he has a great style that fits in perfectly with the way I think and that’s why I believe I connect with this song and that book so well, plus the book is hilarious. Anyway, Dustin took the last few pages of that book and made a song out of them which turned out to be an amazing work in itself. If you read the book after hearing the song it sends chills up your spine (not to be too cliché). However, when you sit at night and listen to the song alone is brings out a scary self revelation.

You Begin to think:

"What if I was to die tonight?"
"Would I have any regrets?"

and most importantly:

"Would anyone miss me?"

After you listen to the song again and read that part of the book you think:

"What can I do to change my life so that if I did die tonight people would like they lost a treasure?"

and you begin to weigh all the different things that meant something to you, and wonder what kind of person you have become. A materialist? A superficial individual? Would others actually be happy because you were gone? If so, what can you do now to change the way they think about you? If you want your life to mean something instead of being just bland nothing-ness then now it the time to do something about it. Take a stand! Don't say you are going to, get up and do it!

“Rhetoric can't raise the dead
I'm sick of always talking when there's no change
I'm sick of empty words, let's lead and not follow”

Do something to change your life. Do you really want to work at McDonalds your whole life or do you want to get out there and make a difference. Open the eyes of close-minded fools. Fight for what you believe in, don't be a push over.

Anyway, that is what the song means to me, what does it mean to you?

Thrice – All That's Left Lyrics 22 years ago
handgun2:

Dustin's songmeanings name is The_Action_Index he has only posted a couple of times though.

Something else I thought about this weekend about this song is when he says

"a ghost is all that's left
of everything we swore we never would forget
we tried to bleed the sickness
but we drained our hearts instead"

Some believers start to slowly slip away from God and back to the temptations of satan. They start with little things like little lies and slowly move onto other, much bigger things.
When you first give your life to Christ you usually say to yourself "I am going to live my whole life for God, give him my everything and do eveyrthing right and never do anything wrong again..." And you swear you "would never forget" about God. The the sins make you feel God for a short amount of time (like heroin) and they become a sickness on your soul. WHat you don't kknow is even thought the sins feel good they are constantly taking a toll on your heart/soul, non-believers call this "Karma." So that is what I THINK he might be saying. He is telling a story about falling back into a life of sin.

REMEMBER: THIS IS ONLY WHAT I PERSONALLY THINK. YOU MIGHT THINK DIFFERENT.

I am wondering what you think about that darnhoodlums?

submissions
Thrice – All That's Left Lyrics 22 years ago
To me I think that he may have written the song as if he were looking through someone elses eyes and asking questions. Especially the last verse when he says

"we are the ones who lost our faith
we dug ourselves an early grave
we are the dead, can we be saved?"

To me it seems as if you were to be sinning and sinning like crazy will God ever forgive you? Can you still be saved even though you have done so much bad? I do very much agree with you on the fact that identity crisis was far more blunt with the lyrics in the songs such as the song Idenity Crisis which to me sounds like the way dustin gave his life to Christ. I especially like the line "This is my voice all shadows stayed, this is my heart upon the alter laid" and "I’ll walk into the flame, a calculated risk to further bless your name" I believe that at that very moment he gave that prayer to God and started a new life. I belioeve that on The illusion of Safety he spoke more metaphorically about religion in order to try and embrace a wider audience opf listeners and get his message heard by more than just believers.
So strike me deep and true, and in your strength I will live and die both unto you.

I gotta go now but I will write more in a few days after I listen to this song some more.

Thrice – To Awake and Avenge the Dead Lyrics 22 years ago
Wow this Johnny fellow is quite the little guy. He must have failed his license test or something the last three months because he has nothing better to do than sit at home on his computer and bitch like a fucking 12 year old girl who got her first period. You tell NTB60 to get a life, but as I scroll down this page I see post after post after post from you. Who needs the life? NTB60 posted once, and then moved on with their life. You keep coming back. Hey man, how's Everquest treating you? Faggot.

Anyway this song is pretty good. I am thinking that I am torn between going with the meanings of reasoning or religion. They both have such a strong presence in the song I am having trouble deciding which he wanted to convey. All the reasoning arguments are strong such as the reference to Aristotle. Then on the other hand we have religion. And the lines:

“This violence in the name of love
but I still feel you
despite your tombstone
but I still feel you
despite your tombstone
so friend you must still walk among us”

have a strong effect in convincing me that it is about religion as well. Because Christian literature states that Christ walks among us still to this day and that the presence of the Holy Spirit can still be felt.

But also since I know Dustin and know that he loves to read and has a vast knowledge of classic theories I am sure he has read The Rhetoric and this song could vary well be about that as well. I don’t know, I’ll just have to wonder forever this way the song can have two meanings to me and which ever applies more at the time I am listening to the song I will go with that choice.

Johnny, you wanna talk some shit? AIM: Dnask8

Thrice – All That's Left Lyrics 22 years ago
I don't believe that the Illusion of Safety talked about an inner conflict with Christianity. I talked to Dustin after a show just this past Halloween in Portland and he told me that he had grown in his faith not lost any of it.

If you listen to songs such as Betrayal is a Symptom (I know I am writing this on the "All That’s Left" page but new listeners will only go to this song since it is on the radio) and break it down and view lines such as: "...somehow I find beauty in my failings, somehow I find meaning in this life, some how I look perfect in this fracture...I walk with eyes closed, glancing down to hide my face." Possibly he sinned and he could be glancing down to hide the shame he felt from sinning. Even though he messed up God gives him the power to find meaning in a life that someone else would consider worthless and he found a certain value for his life, what ever that value may be.

Also on songs like See You in the Shallows look at it as a person putting all trust in God and taking a (metaphorical) plunge into Gods hands. And when he "glances his down to see he crew" They aren’t ready for the commitment yet and he is taking it alone because he is ready that’s why he is confused and says “…don’t know why I am even here, because I’m afraid to be alone…”

On the song In Years to Come he could be talking about the love he feels for God (Though I tell my girlfriend to listen to that song because it puts into words the way I feel about her) and Dustin is trying to put into words what he would do for God (or maybe someone he loves immensely) and sings the most extreme cases he can think of to prove how much he would do for this person. He says “It’s a gift that keeps on giving…I’ll give you all I have to give” and he could be either talking to God or a girl he loves saying that he will do everything, everything he can to show them how much he loves them in all the years to come. And love is a gift that keeps on giving especially Gods love. And the lines: “I need you more than I'll ever know. Until I stop breathing, my lungs will take you for granted.” Sounds to me like he is talking to God or someone else he loves a lot. I think that this is the best song Thrice ever wrote. It can be viewed as both a love song or a confession of love to God. Either way which ever YOU see is what he song means remember: MUSIC IS DIVERSE! THESE ARE ALL MY OPINIONS YOURS WILL BE DIFFERENT!

Other songs display the Christian connection as well on “The Illusion of Safety” here are a few others quickly:

Deadbolt – talks about the temptations of Satan.
To Awake and Avenge The Dead – Christ’s life after death and The Holy Spirit/ I also think it is about Reasoning (double meaning or something)

Anyway remember that ALL of this is just my opinions if you see it differently then so be it. I don’t care, I am sharing what I think and if you don’t like it then post your own theory. Again I don’t care, you have you thoughts I have mine.

Oh yeah and I like the new song here All That’s Left. I think it is a great progression for Thrice, though it is a bit disappointing to hear them on the radio but we all knew it was coming sooner or later so don’t seem to surprised, we all knew they had the talent and they are finally getting the respect they deserve for being so amazing. Better start saving your dollars though, because their shows are going to start costing a lot more to go see. No more $10 shows. I can’t wait for the new album to come out of the 22nd. I am going to be waiting in line at the record store to pick up my copy. I have high expectations for the album and I know my favorite band won’t let me down.

Ten Times A Day – Merry Christmas Dad Lyrics 23 years ago
This song says a lot in it's simplicity. I totally understand what he is saying completely and I am sure half of the country sees it right along with me. It doesn't really affect me as much as it may affect others since my parents split up when I was so young so what I know is normal in my mind. Some see normal as having a mother AND father present through childhood when I see having just a mother and later a step-father as being normal. I think I turned out just fine and only recently has my father tried to re establish contact with me but oh well I guess. Fuck him. I don't need his sorry ass.
