James – She's A Star Lyrics 13 years ago
I meant to say "put on your shades and you feel safe"

That's a great way of looking at it and I must confess I haven't even seen the video, so perhaps I should! That does make more sense.

This song is one of those which is difficult to hear properly and you can apply different lyrics or meaning to it based on what you thought you heard.

To me, I always heard the line "put on your shades and you feel fine"..maybe not while actually listening to the song, but just in my mind when I think of the song.. and that to me, set a whole different tone and meaning to the song, than what it appears to mean looking at the lyrics. The feeling I got was of a shy struggling star who is a reluctant star, trapped in this celebrity lifestyle but really intently shy and wanting to hide away.

However, if you read the lyrics closely, it looks to be more about a person who emerges as a star based on their beliefs and being brave enough to speak out.

Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics 13 years ago
It's interesting how the theme of night and night sky, stars and moon, often feature somewhere in Depeche Mode's songs written by Martin Gore.. sometimes they provide some comfort or reassurance like in this song... and at other times, the night itself is a kind of escape... like in "Waiting for the Night to Fall" "I'm waiting for the night to fall, when everything is bearable".. it seems like Martin is perhaps a night person and intently shy. They do say that creativity is often much higher during the night hours. It's funny but, it's now past 4am as I write this, and there's a single bright star in the sky, much brighter and closer than all the others.

Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is said to be about heroin. There was a performance by Depeche Mode in Paris some years ago where this song appeared at the end of the concert and during the song at the line "promises me I'm as safe as houses.." Dave puts his arm into a shooting up position and taps his arm as if to mimic getting a vein up.. this to many Mode fans, leaves no doubt this song is about getting high from shooting heroin.

However, it's unclear whether Dave was using at the time of the song being written, and also the song was written by Martin Gore. Maybe he was inspired to write it by Dave if he was using. Or maybe it's a completely innocent song about Martin going flying with a friend in a plane. It does read more like that to me.

I guess Martin is the only one who knows and someone should ask him, what inspired this song.
