Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is a moving and beautiful love song. The singer is declaring his love to a person and asking for a total immersion of love and time together without worrying about the world around them. Maybe their love affair was cut short in the past due to prejudices and judgement by others. He is trying to capture the lost time and return to a simpler time in their lives when they were young. "Chasing cars in our heads"" is his invitation to be like children playing in the streets chasing cars passing but knowing that it is impossible to catch up to a speeding car. Revisit a lost youth and time they could have spent together but in their heads. Think like a child.

He is inviting the person to lie down and take in the world in a quiet, tranquil manner, no rush. There is no need to ask permission nor approval of others about this relationship. I picture an older couple coming together finally after years of missed opportunities.

I always think about the last scene in the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marques, Love in the Time of Cholera, when the two lovers, older, finally are given the opportunity to be together after decades of missed opportunities. All they do is simply lie down on the bed together. Come what may! No hurrying. No rush. All this while traveling on a steam boat up and down the River Magdalena avoiding the cholera epidemic.

Snow Patrol – Open Your Eyes Lyrics 11 years ago
I happened to be reading Plato's Allegory of a Cave while listening to this song. To me it sounds like the idea of opening one's eyes and seeing the truth could possibley come from Plato. The song refers to the feelings of false truths. The person has discovered the truth and wants the other person to open his/her eyes. In the Allegory of the Cave there are prisoners chained in the dark where they can only see their shadows. These shadows represent the only truth they know, it is their reality. However, one of them is forced to step out and look at the light. By looking at the light his eyes hurt from the lack of use. A fire has been lit in his body from the knowledge and he cannot return to the lies and darkness. Plato talks about how if he were to return to the cave the others will laugh at him. This person can never return to the lies.

So in the song whether it is lover or friend is not relevant, this enlightened person has discovered the truth, what ever it may be, and wants to share this with the lover/friend. Just like us when we find a great movie or book or song, etc... we want to share it with someone special in our lives. The beauty of the song is that it is written with so much meaning and description yet it allows each listener to find a personal and unique meaning to the lyrics.
