There are two ways to interpret this song. 1. At the end of their story "The road this far can't be retraced. There is no punch line anybody can tack on" or 2. The couple have just bought their house and on their fist night they are beginning to realize the truly horrific mistake they both have made. |

I don't interpret the Alpha Couple as having children, I think that they are just two people that prefer being miserable and rage-filled to being lonely. They stay together because they have some sort of fucked up union that both of them rely on. Like a drug that is destroying them both, they're addicted to the mutual hate. I think they wish they had children so they had a proper reason to stay together. |
