And I know Augustana ... Dan Layus mother, she had diabetes and all that, and some people think it's about that. "Sweet and Low" is a sugar substitute or whatever, so he's urging her to refrain from sugar, etc. ... please, like some dude's gonna write a song about a sugar substitute. Per contra, he can't resist the 8 year old, but doesn't wanna be alone. So "hold me down" (like you said, literally .... tie him up so he doesn't maul her) little girl. |

| That's actually a solid interpretation, and could very well be the case. But it's "you're gonna make the same mistakes that put my momma in her grave" .... but to your point, he's probably saying that teasing him and taunting him ... even though she's only 7 or 8, and he's begging her not to tease him anymore ... or he'll end up committing suicide just like his mom once the authorities catch on to his behaviors. Well thought-out interpretation for a change! Refreshing! | |

The top-rated answer (of hundreds) on another website: The writer could be speaking of his spouse, girlfriend, friend or family member(let's say the person is his wife). I imagine she is very ill, nearing the end of her life. He has held on to the hope that she will recover but ultimately realizes he must let her go(the solution). The decision is his only, so he "closes/locks the window" on the rest of the world's opinions. With the "window" being shut and locked, "the world" must leave their thoughts "on the window"(as opposed to INSIDE the window). To make the right decision, he must block out the thoughts and feelings of everyone else. He closes the blinds to shield the sun(life) from her so that she may finally rest in peace. Once the "sun has set" she will no longer feel pain, and he will no longer have to hold on to his hopelessness. This new beginning(for both of them) is not simple, BUT it's the only way. |
