From the time we were young children, we were taught about how to be a "good Christian". But, the TRUTH is, we learned a watered down, 'safe' version of being a Christian. The truth is that there are 'wolves underneath', basically meaning the teachings of Christ, the TRUTH he presented from the Father, was presented to us in an incorrect way.

For this part:
"We got our sidewalks.
We got all of our safely lit streets.
We got all of our light tested beliefs.
But when I find love so bright in the alleyway, they throw her overboard, I watch her get lost in the wake."

I see it as the 'institutionalized church' for lack of a better term, fails to sacrifice to maintain the truth, when "love is so bright in the alleyway", or, when they need to show love/compassion to a person or group that is in an 'inconvenient' situation or stance...they instead look inward towards bettering themselves and play it safe, rather than really reaching out to show the depth of the love God has shown them.

That's what I think this song means...

So what now? We must seek truth, aside from what we've been taught in sunday school. I'm not saying everything we have been taught is wrong, no, but much of it has been twisted into something that 'feels good' and does not require effort on a personal level. We must put aside what we've been brainwashed with (they fixed your brain when you were young) and truly seek to find this truth that Jesus has presented to us. We must see ALL human beings as God's creation, and love them spiritually, love their souls.
