TIG= You are correct in a roundabout way. It is about activism and it is not. It's about a heated discussion between 2 people who were attempting to come together for the greater good. The band at the time though was butting heads on which direction to go after the sudden catapult in fame. I remember distinctly the time period this song was written. The human psyche comment you made- I don't know? - that may or may not be relevant in regards? Though from my perspective- ppl may enjoy their solitude-in the long run- everyone needs to belong to a tribe to survive! Back to the song- I'M NOT TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE I'LL STOP TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE NO WAY It's a play on words...classic Gossard, in a sense. Again, the conversation was "You could be making a difference but instead you guys are arguing" Then the song writing went in the direction of the romantic relationship that was problematic. Believe what you want...but that's the gist of it. |

Song was written sometime in 1999, right? By Stone? Ed said it in an interview it was about Stone experiencing love? "Young Love" b/c Ed himself was at that time in a 17 yr relationship so he said that he couldn't have written it. Had that perspective. "She's reached my heart in thin air" A gal has touched Stone's heart but is gone (not a part of his life). She's disappeared. I'd consider it a hopefully love song about lost love. They guy is hopeful she will return. He's optimistic. I wonder whom Stone was involved with in the late 90s? She probably is the inspiration. |

| It's a song about Stone and the frustration he was having with a relationship. IF you think I'm wrong, you might want to look up the Dave LEtterman performance of the song from 1996. Stone is dressed in a very odd fashion. I won't go in to details too too much but it's about him wanting to get a point across in a relationship. The song was a bit cynical/angry which actually in conflicts resolves nothing BUT the outfit he donned made an enormous impact of her heart. Enough said. | |

This song IS about a relationship. But not about a relationship where the girl is out partying all the time! (not that relationship at all) If you want a PJ song about that listen to MANKIND. This song is simply about a fella that is truly, madly, deeply head over heels for a gal that only he gets (read- understands/sees/hears). His friends don't understand the allure/attraction/devotion. Metaphorically, she is "the siren". She is STRONG WILLED. (a force of nature) Common man don't stand a chance? Means she wont have a relationship with just anyone. He has to be "different", the type people say "thinks outside the box". Not your everyday man. The fella in the song is going to wait for this gal b/c he believes in his heart, she's the one. His hope is liely to bring her back, too. She's the type that needs to believe someone will hang in for the long haul so even if they go separate ways, he remains devoted to her.
