My thoughts: Overall, this song is about a young man who drives his girlfriend insane by expressing all his hate and negative emotions to her, transferring the stress onto her. At first, she tries to help him by listening to him and letting him release anger. But over time by doing this, the pressure of dealing with his erratic behavior slowly takes over her own sanity. So while he is being relieved by letting his rage out, she is gradually losing her mind to his "emotional venting." Because she still loves him, and he still loves her, they stay together. However, since their relationship becomes so dysfunctional, she eventually can't handle it. Now mentally unstable, the girl has a meltdown and almost commits suicide while the boyfriend is out. When he returns, he finally realizes how venting all of his anger was corrupting her over time, and quickly calls for an ambulance. As the paramedic takes her off to a hospital, he regrets not being able to see the effects of his actions earlier and break things off before things went wrong. He apologizes to the empty room even though it's far too late for it matter. |

Let's first establish that this song is about a problematic relationship. I think that one's obvious. The main issue with his relationship is trust. He is loyal to her, but she is doubtful in him anyway. So she constantly "tests" his faith and makes him very uneasy to boost her confidence in their relationship, even though he trusts her 100 percent. At first he goes along with it even though it makes him feel horrible, because he is insecure and wants to prove himself to her. (The sacrifice of hiding in a lie.) Due to his low-esteem, he thought he deserved to be questioned and feel uncomfortable in the relationship. (I've tried, like you, to do everything you wanted to.) But after a while, it drives him crazy since she won't give up on the game. He finally realizes that he can't love her if she isn't willing to trust him. (Now I see your testing me pushes me away.) And so he leaves her, forgetting why he tested HIMSELF at all-- knowing very well the whole time HE was being faithful. (The sacrifice is never knowing... why i never, etc.) THE END |
