| Loreena McKennitt – The Lady of Shalott Lyrics | 11 years ago |

For anyone unfamiliar with the poem, the Lady of Shalott is afflicted by a curse, which forces her to continually weave images in tapestries and be unable to look out into the world. The only way she can see the outside world is through the reflection of a mirror, but she sees people living their lives out the reflection which causes her great longing to live a normal life. She sees Lancelot ride by in the reflection of the mirror. She is so stricken by him the it causes her to break weaving and look out of the window to Camelot, which brings about the curse. Realizing this, she leaves her tower and finds a boat, and inscribes her name on it, She lays down in the boat to float toward Camelot, but dies from the curse on the way. Upon the boat reaching Camelot, it draws the attention of the knights, for she was quite beautiful, and Sir Lancelot comments "She has a lovely face; God in his mercy lend her grace," Quite a tragic poem, beautiful in both its original form and in this form set to music. |

I think this song is a monologue of a person who has found happiness after trying to find it for a long time. He's talking about a person who is very dear to him who he recently found after searching for a long time to find a soul mate, and this song is a description of how that person makes him feel, but he realizes that we are only very fleeting moments in the universe, and such a thing won't last for ever, no matter how good it is. He could also be remembering a person who was very dear to him, but for some reason isn't any more, or still is but he can't see them anymore. He's talking about how that person made him feel, and regretting that he didn't cherish the moments they had more, and he spends the rest of his life waiting for that person to return and make him feel that way again. A lot of VNV's songs seem to be interpretable as a song about relationships present, future, and past. Makes me think Ronan hes experienced a lot of emotional pain in regards to relationships. But then, haven't we all? Maybe that's why VNV's songs are so universal. |
