From a December 1988 London Observer interview William admited the song is about drugs.
"'The songs aren't stories, they're not like a diary. I don't really have a clue what our songs are about,' says William. 'They're usually words thrown together to fit a line or a tune. But that doesn't mean the end result is meaningless. Sometimes the way your mind works is too complex to follow. Like with 'Some Candy Talking', it's obvious to us now that it WAS a drug song and all the people who criticized us at the time were right. But at the time we were adamant that it wasn't about that at all." |

I've always thought 'On A Bus' described the bus ride home after a late night of partying. Michael Hutchence rattles off the signs that light up the night (liquor, flats, drugs, gas). All of the items he sees are useful in his life including 'you' who is useful too (for money). Sometimes those late night bus rides can be 'frightening' either from real danger, perceived danger or drug-induced danger. All of the riders are hypnotized by the city lights, the monotonous bus ride or the drugs/alcohol they have consumed. |
