| hmmm...I didn't mean to insinuate that Jack Johnson had an emotional affair since that might not even be what this song is about. Whatever it's about, the words in S1 and S4 sound like actual situations whereas the words in S2 and S3 sound like possible situations. | |

At first glance it looks to be a linear progression of thought while, in action, S2 and S3 seem to be mutually exclusive. S2's "It's the only chance for you"........the only chance for what? To back out? To forge forward because you may never feel this way about anyone else ever again? Or does he mean to say that an affair is her only chance because he'll never leave his wife. It's interesting that S2 and S3 can be interpreted with exact opposite meanings and then flip-flopped. MrMakossa: I have responded to your question below your comment. |

Yes. I have lived this song. Much like Jack Johnson, we chose my interpretation of S1 and S4, however, the resolution to do so was his. He broke it lightly with a humorous joke he made about the contradictions of his mind. We mutually agreed to cut contact, but each slid back and broke the agreement. We recently renewed the agreement, which is why this song about life’s situations has touched a nerve. With this song and Chris Rice’s rendition of “Come Thou Fount,” I’m approaching this renewed agreement with fortitude. While not a resolute believer, I do like the part of the song where he sings “Let Thy goodness like a fetter, bind my wondering heart to Thee.” --Because sometimes I feel I need fetters to keep me from contacting him. To be clear, we never had a physical affair. We both danced around it, giving each other ample opportunity, but neither of us made a move to the next level. It may have been a little bit about personal morals, but I’d like to think it was also because we liked each other so much that neither of us wanted to hurt the other. Because in an affair there are two perpetrators, but in the end there are usually three victims. |

"And I do like you, you're the lucky one. No I'm the lucky one." I think he's saying you have to be someone's luck to get some luck for yourself. Be lucky to get lucky. |

I brought my 65-year old mom to this concert last year. She was a good sport :) I'll always remember this song for making me smile again after a very hard year. It is especially good in concert with everyone waiving their cell phones and singing along. |

This song is about an emotional affair with someone who's older than you and already married. There are 4 situations that could happen: Situation number one It’s the one that’s just begun But evidently it’s too late You're getting to know him and realize how great he is. But it's too late because he's already married with a family. The word "evidently" is used because most people realize affairs are bad, but some people do it anyway. Which leads us down 2 clear-cut roads--those being situation 2 and 3. Situation number two It’s the only chance for you It’s controlled by denizens of hate Situation number 2 happens when you forge ahead with the affair and everyone begins to hate you for it. Situation number three It’s the one that no one sees It’s all too often dismissed as fate Situation number 3 is when you you realize he's married and back away. No one notices and you get on with your life. Situation number four It’s the one that left you wanting more It tantalized you with it’s bait Situation number four is your grey area. You don't forge ahead with the affair but you don't back away either. You dream and think and wish and maybe even hope a little. But you ultimately realize you can't go forward even though you want more. |
