| The Mamas & the Papas – It Never Rains In California Lyrics
| 12 years ago

I don't think the Mamas & The Papas sang this, tho it sure is their type of thing.
I think it means that the people in CA live in denial, they swear it never rains, it's always sunny and lovely; but the truth is, it DOES rain. The rain however is a metaphor: people are just as miserable in CA as anywhere else, but they hide it better.
Having lived in CA for 27 years now, and a native New Yorker, I see the song this way because that is the way I see Californians. |

Like many songs Caramel can be interprted on at least 2 levels: one is the simple boy/girl relationship level, as people have noted; the other, also noted, is about addiction. Having recently quit smoking, and now addicted to chocolate, I can't help seeing it this way, as the sweets addiction. Or she might mean heroin too, often couched as sugar in lyrics since time immemorial. Whatever she means, this is one of my favorite songs of all time. When I play it I have to play it several times in a row. The music, the whole arrangement, is exquisite. I have to sing to it also. Vega is a poet, as someone said, but so are a lot of other singer-songwriters. She really hit the ball outta the park with this one. |

I think her post-performance mood was probably due to typical physical body crashing following the intensity of performing. It's a chemical thing. |
