Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Watching Alice Lyrics 13 years ago
Uh, I don't it's about Alice Liddell.

''Her hair falls down her breast''

Alice had short hair, and didn't have any breasts (she was a child at the time Lewis Carroll was supposedly in love with her).

She was also pale white, so her body wasn't golden brown.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand Lyrics 13 years ago
It's about the devil.
''Red right hand'' comes from Paradise Lost. In the poem it's pretty obvious it's about Satan.

It may not be about the devil himself but about a generalized evil. A more psychological Satan rather than a spiritual one.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Little Empty Boat Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's a combination of all previous interpretations.

A drunk girl is hitting on him on a party, and he compares her seduction with trying to convert him to her religion.
He doesn't have any faith and he thinks he shouldn't fuck the girl (because she's drunk? or simply because of the complications that come with sex), but she's appealing, and religion is appealing.

A boat is a religious symbol (Noah, Moses, Jonah), and it's also an euphemism to sex. He doesn't have any faith, and he doesn't have any interest in having sex with her. It ain't happening, it won't row.

Religion = sex.
And it also hints to sex = death (''that grave you've dug between your legs'').

Very Nick Cave-ish concepts.

I think this song is about the boogie man.

Aphex Twin – To Cure A Weakling Child Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't think it's a stretch to say it's about child abuse. In the context of such a dark and disturbing album, it was the first thing that crossed my mind.

Beck – Loser Lyrics 13 years ago
''Soy un perdedor'' means ''I'm a loser''.

Most of the lyrics are improvised, I think. I believe Beck said in a interview that he says he's a loser because he thinks he's a bad rapper. Ironic, isn't it?

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band – Frownland Lyrics 13 years ago
I think he sings ''it's not too late for you, IF it's not too late for me'', not ''it's not too late for you, it's not too late for me''.

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band – Electricity Lyrics 13 years ago
Right on, caitsith01! This song is majestic, the way he conducts the raw power and energy of the music is mind-blowing, particularly through the use of the theremin, the vocals and the guitar. It's incredibly unique, but it doesn't feel like an experiment whose only purpose is to try to innovate, he uses his inventive and visionary methods to make the song itself work, and not the other way around.

I agree with Malkmusianon. Considering the time when this song was written, in which Don's music quality was decreasing immensely for years and he felt obligated to write more conventional music because of his crushing commercial failure in the past, obviously he was feeling very angry and frustrated with his art, his public and himself. In my opinion this album is the best of his later phase, this song in particular is amazing.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Your Funeral, My Trial Lyrics 13 years ago
One of my favorite songs lyric-wise.
My personal interpretation is that it is about a man killing his lover.
''Your funeral, my trial'' obviously means murder, I think.

He's broken and he's been through a lot (''I am a crooked man and I've walked a crooked mile''), but now nighttime comes and all the universe knows it's his time (''the stars all winked at me''), time for him to get his vengeance.

He was cheated, wronged and used like a little lamb (May Had a Little Lamb). I'm not sure if ''a thousand Marys'' means a girl named Mary who had multiple faces/personas, meaning she was a liar and manipulator, or that there were multiple girls with whom he had negative experiences, and he calls them ''Mary'' because all women are the same to him, and all of them want to control and own him, as if he were their little lamb. Anyway, she/them seduced him (''lured me to feathered beds and fields of glover''), but as soon as he went with her, he knew he had been trapped (''bird with crooked wing cast it's wicked shadow over''), he feels that the whole universe is laughing at him for falling for the trap (''a bauble moon did mock and trinket stars did smile'').

But now it's his time, now he's the one luring and hurting (''here I am, little lamb...''). ''Let all the bells in whoredom ring'' means that a whore died, and all the other whores in whoreland are alarmed, all of her faces and lies are now gone (''All the crooked bitches that she was'') and when she was dying she saw the world the way he sees it, as an evil, dangerous place (''mongers of pain, saw the moon become a fang'').

Just my opninion anyway.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Scum Lyrics 13 years ago
I think Nick himself confirmed it's about Mat Snow.
If I remember correctly, Mr. Snow wrote that The Bad Seeds lacked the dramatic tension The Birthday Party had, I think this is Nick's way of saying ''you wanted tension? here's your fucking tension''.

Pretty straightforward song about rural exodus, a common theme in Tom's songs.

Tom Waits – Alice Lyrics 13 years ago
Absolutely my favorite lyrics and song of all time. Doesn't matter how many times I hear it, it always sends shivers down my spine and brings tears to me eyes.

And yes, as many said before, I also believe it's about Lewis Carroll's love for Alice.
Notice how the melody, voice and lyrics all evoke a particular feeling of being drifted away (the lyrics explicit mentions it a few times), as in some peaceful but sad dream. I think this represents Carroll's confusion and his struggle to control himself. He's being carried away by his desires, he tries to resist but deep down he's not sure he really wants to contain it. So he's stuck in this numbed state of mind, where he knows whatever he choses to do will have great negative consequences for himself and others, his mind is filled with doubt and contraditory thoughts (he knows it's immoral, but he truly loves her and love is generally seen as a beautiful and positive feeling), but he doesn't want to think about it, he doesn't care, because all he thinks about, and all what matters to him, is Alice.

Tom Waits – Swordfishtrombone Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't think that's what ''skanked'' means. ''Skank'' can also mean to steal or take, I think that's what Tom meant, because ''skank'' as in ''slut'' is a very modern slang, and ''skank'' as in ''steal'' is an older term. Considering Tom's style and that the song is set during or right after World War I, I think the second meaning is much more appropriate.

''Skanked her head with every word'' means that he made her talk, tell her secrets. Also, ''canary bird'' is often used as a slang for an informant, a snitch. So, what it means is, the lieutenant got a girl to snitch on the Doughboy, probably the little girl he ''put a spell on'' earlier, which would explain why he ''got 20 years for lovin' her''. Just my opinion.
