I think this song seems to be Panda Bear doing some self-reflection by talking to a horse "The Preakness," a horserace course He's asking himself what it means to quit, what you might lose or miss out on, and thinking about what it means to the horse too- "yours [the horse] might be a den to sleep in, mine [panda] is just a way of being" He doesn't want to make a judgement of the horse's [and perhaps his own] passion or dedication, and in the end he says "I'd like just to say, keep it up" till it gets what it's after (in competition or satisfaction or whatever it might be) And then "see your hopes become my hopes" - Tl;dr he is doing some self-reflecting by seeing aspects of himself in the racehorse |

To me this is about how in the past, before the days where technology and the pace of modern society felt natural to us, we had NATURE as our natural environment...and somehow the separation from the natural world that so many of us have has given us an altogether different view of "fantasy," In the past, fantasy was actually fantasy, where vikings brought back wild stories from the bogs and fantasies were inspired by the imagination... Whereas today the "fantasy" we have is more like escapism, trying to relate something imaginative in away that is so realistic it hardly resembles the grandiose myths and legends of the past (which were unteathered by any kind of factual basis) The idea is that by being in the natural world we feel more natural, and find less of a need for the escapism that helps us cope with modern life ---- when we get rid of the need for escapism, our imagination is allowed to be totally free from the constraints of "being realistic enough to actually believe" As a note, "Big Raven" (Kutkh) refers to an entity in Russian far east indigenous cultures who represents a trickster, shaman, and creation spirit. This is where the reference to Amanita Muscaria comes in; the indigenous people of this Russian region were known to use the mushroom as an entheogen. It is somewhat unusual for Animal Collective to feature blatantly references to drugs, and the use of Amanita in particular is interesting: the drug, which is legal, has been known to produce unpredictable effects on the user (often when taken by irresponsible people in the wrong setting at high doses,) however other people who have used the mushroom successfully say that it has increased natural understanding and appreciation for the natural world/beauty Animal Collective seems to have an understanding of the use of drugs and such things that's very different from the typical ideas found in psychedelic culture: rather than "tune it, turn on, drop out," Animal Collective (from my personal interpretation) seem to see these substances as catalysts for personal growth and not just entertainment and "tripping out" When drugs are used for escapism, you're more likely to become the prisoner of the limits of your mind. When they are used to gain different understanding, your mind can accomplish things that ordinary consciousness simply cannot do. (I'd like to add that this applies not just to drugs, but also the alterations of consciousness that come from meditation, religious spirituality, trance, and so fourth) As human beings we have the capacity for other forms of consciousness; these other forms aren't there just so that we can merely be entertained. They have a purpose, and can be used to our benefit or our destruction (a similar theme in Pulleys, I think) |

I love these lyrics; my family used to take long drives up the east coast because we had family all over the place, and I can remember things like the south carolina "south of the border" The song just reminds me of those fond memories of just sitting in the backseat, watching the world pass by, daydreaming |

| Daft Punk – Face to Face Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
My idea is that the song's about how lots of people meet each other and get to know each other over the internet, often in chatrooms (that's how I interpret the little voice clip, which always sounded to me like "Mr. Footlong." As in, Mr. Footlong, that dude in the chatroom trying to advertise his dick.) "When you finally meet face to face," the person isn't what you expected/things are awkward ("I must admit, it's my pride that made me distant/All because I hoped that you'd be someone different.") When I was in middle school I had a few relationships that developed over facebook and AIM rather than in person, so a lot of the lyrics relate to that in my interpretation. "There's not much to know about you," -you can only learn so much about someone from chatting/texting with them. "I turned away 'cause I thought you were the problem/Tried to forget until I hit the bottom." - You get to know someone on the internet, and sometimes it feels like that's the only way you CAN get to know them. "But when I faced you in my blank confusion/I had to see it was just a mere illusion." When drama happens, it finally becomes clear how shallow those relationships/friendships are. "It's not hard to go the distance." -Face to face communication isn't hard, and in fact it's much, much better. "It's amazing what you'll find face to face." |

| "Bionic hee-haw"...a very interesting mental image. Hee-haw was a tv show back in the day, kind of a redneck-comedy country music variety show | |
