To me, the meaning of this song is all contained in it's title. Cough srup is a REMEDY that we all use (well most of us)_ to alleviate systems brought on by colds and flu. It's noticable traits are the awful taste and a need for a hard swallow to get it down. But our song hero is not suffering from a cold. His sickness is depression which was spawned from failure, disaapointment and quite possibly lousy treatment from judgemental people (the fishes) and small minded, cynical, people (the Zombies). The REMEDY for depression involes swallowing your pride and seeking help from others. No one likes to have to do this, but at some point you cave in. You must also swallow your regets so you don't get stuck wallowing in self-pity. Hisr life is at a standstill because of this. This process is long and difficult. So he deals with it a spoonful at a time. |

The person in this song is reflecting on his life up to now and realizes that he has fallen short of achieving some goal (be it fame, wealth, social recognition, etc.) "Life's too short to even care at all " because he knows there are no 2nd chances, no do-overs, no Mulligans at this point. He is obsessing over this failure to point of "losing" his mind and "control." "These fishes in the sea they're staring at me" He feels that a spotlight is on him. Everyone is staring at him and his failure. "These Zombies in the park, they're looking for my heart" The zombies are the nay-sayers, the people that want to see him fail, the ones that want to tell him 'i told you so...' When zombies bite you, you become one of them. He is trying to resist these negative people in his life. "If I could find a way to see this straight, I'd run away To some fortune that I, I should have found by now..." Failed expectations haunt him. "And so I run to the things they said could restore me Restore life the way it should be I'm waiting for this cough syrup to come down..." So he seeks the advice and suggestions from other people, he is trying to rebuild himself perhaps, through some spiritual wisdom or lifestlye change. "One more spoon of cough syrup now whoa..." The Cough syrup is sweet, bitter, thick, and hard to swallow. He is trying to swallow his pride and regrets so he can move on in life. |

To me, this song is a portayal of someone who is suffering from clinical depression. and the "cough syrup" he takes is his antidepressant. Severe depression can derail one's life to a point where he can't work, sleep, concentrate, and make them consider suicide "wet world aches for the beat of a drum..." The mental illness is making him feel out of place in his world. He's not in his element. These are the isolating effects of depression. "These fishes in the sea they're staring at me oh oh oh oh oh oh" It is also alienating him to the point where people around him appear menacing. He feels vulnerable to people who have emotional/mental stabily " These zombies in the park, they're looking for my heart, oh oh " In addition to losing interest in life, he is thinking of how good life would have been if only he could escape the depression. " If I could find a way to see this straight I'd run away To some fortune that I, I should have found by now " So hes takes all the remedies and prescriptions that Doctors and drug makers push on us in hopes of resuming a normal life " And so I run now to the things they said could restore me Restore life the way it should be I'm waiting for this cough syrup to come down." Unfortunately antidepressants, like cough syrup have to be repeatedly taken to feel any affect and it only relieves symptoms but is not a cure. Antidepressants are notoriously slow in lifting you out of clinical depression. So What can you do ? But continue popping them till you notice the positive affects, " I'm waiting for this cough syrup to come down One more spoon of cough syrup now, whoa " |
