Kevin Devine – The City Has Left You Alone Lyrics 7 years ago
I like this one a lot. I think it's about an emotionally distant woman living in New York. She essentially moves through life on autopilot after some kind of heartbreak. She ends up in a bar, a man tries to take her home, she becomes another cliche, but the narrator isn't judging her for it. She makes her choices, life keeps moving.

Kevin Devine – A Story, A Sneak Lyrics 7 years ago
I've been thinking about this song a lot. This is what I get from it:

He's on an airplane, reflecting and reminiscing. He has a girl back on the ground who is a "muse" of sorts (hence the first verse) but she's young, naive, and privileged. He cringes at the way she sees the world and wonders why he is so drawn to younger women. Recognizing the gap (in age, ideology) and his own flaws, he becomes stressed out on the airplane and tries to calm himself down. He looks out the window, and tries to get out of his seat before being asked to return by the flight attendant.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness – All Our Lives Lyrics 11 years ago
The first verse is a pretty blunt reference to heroin. Probably a musician that Andrew met in a bar who put music aside to fuel his addiction.

Overall I think this song is really about self-reflection, both in the way people view their own mistakes and the way the perceive others'. Like when he sees the woman driving in the car and crying, he feels connected to her knowing that they've both made mistakes. But as you get older, you learn from your experiences, and let the old ones go.

Elliott Smith – You Make It Seem Like Nothing Lyrics 12 years ago
this song is so beautifully melancholy.

"I can't help you when you're sad
That's a constant source of pain to me
Because I want to really bad
Even though you make it seem like nothing"

so painfully true. brilliant.

an obvious slam against Sheriff Joe (Maricopa County Sheriff), SB 1070, and treatment of Hispanics in Arizona. the audio clip at the end of him talking is where the title comes from.

Elliott Smith – The Biggest Lie Lyrics 12 years ago
This is one of my favorite Elliott songs, if not THE favorite. Which is odd for me because I generally prefer his later material.

I really love the imagery though. I wanna make a cute music video for it someday. I picture it switching back and forth between a crowded train station in the beginning to a cute couple in a field. as more of a flashback.

I really like the alternate lyrics.

Bright Eyes – Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved) Lyrics 12 years ago
I feel like this song is kind of a nod to Bob Dylan's Only A Pawn In Their Game. There's some lyrical similarities at least.

Bright Eyes: "I don't have them to blame...we're still the pawns in their game."
vs Bob Dylan: "But it ain't him to blame. He's only a pawn in their game."

fun. – What the Fuck Lyrics 13 years ago
also some comments on the actual lyrics:

I'm pretty sure this entire song is addressed to Rachel Antonoff. the first verse sounds like a panic attack where she's out late and he has some sort of mental breakdown and goes through all her stuff. he reflects on their past for the next couple verses.

"So I stand corrected and relieved, drunk and uncomfortable in heels
I suppose that it makes sense you’d never run and tell your friend...
Oh, that you left too soon, found me dolled up in your room - I know just what you’d say"--
I think that has something to do with both of them being insecure that Nate is so feminine. A couple years ago Nate told a story where he was at a bar in New York and someone called him a fag so Rachel told them off. (Nate said she beat him up but I'm pretty sure he was overexaggerating.) There was an online chat on absolutepunk I think where Nate said he loves to dress in drag. A lot of people questioned his sexuality before they found out he was dating Rachel, so I feel like that's probably a sore subject for both of them.

The next two verses make it sound like they got in a fight about it and he's walking out of her apartment about to leave. He's torn because he still loves her but he's also very hurt. He reflects back to another time when they almost broke up and he remembers seeing a painful look on her face. He's leaving sad and angry but he sees a picture and completely loses it remembering how much he loves her.

" Well, there’s a picture on your dresser drawer and it doesn’t even look like me...
I was there in the suit you made, you were beautiful, it was your birthday"
Rachel is a designer. She made the suits he and The Format wore at the Mayan Theater show in 2007 (she worked for Mooka Kinney...the DVD credits say so). That show was on June 14th, the day before her real life birthday. She must have a picture of him at that show framed in her room. He sees it and remembers his old life (he did look quite different back then) and all that they've been through together.

"Do you remember when I woke you up to tell you I love you? Well, I still do." Again, thinking back to a specific moment in their relationship.

Basically, this entire song is about the ups and downs in the history of their relationship and how no matter how many fights they get in they still come back to loving each other. It's probably really personal to him which is why I'm kind of doubting that it'll be released by Fun.....

both of those are Limbeck album titles which makes sense since Patrick did guest vocals.

"That song will put a spell on you if you think of it too much
The music stored in your brain is adjacent to the space where you feel love"

Favorite line. Such a great lyric. It really sums up my feelings towards music.

Also the imagery in this reminds me a lot of Sunset Limited by Limbeck. Probably because of the whole Tucson thing.

fun. – Benson Hedges Lyrics 13 years ago
I love the imagery in this song. I always picture driving around in a shitty old van on a highway somewhere through the desert.

This is just me speculating but the aforementioned "border town" might be Benson, Arizona. It's a tiny town in the middle of nowhere and there's a lot of run down motels...it sort of fits with the song.

Nate has said the title of this song is a reference to a character in The Baxter, but I think it could be both.

"My life's measured out in coffee spoons" is a reference to a poem: The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock by T.S. Eliot.

I really like the verse lyrics in the demo version a lot. They're a lot more poetic than the album track.

Reubens Accomplice – I Love You, But I'm Tired Lyrics 13 years ago
The first verse is taken from one of their old demos called Day by Day. The lyrics are exactly the same but the melody is way different.

Also, Davey von Bohlen from The Promise Ring does the chorus "when it turns...." He's awesome.

Jimmy Eat World – If You Don't, Don't Lyrics 13 years ago
"9th and Ash on a Tuesday night" is referencing Casey Moore's Oyster House in Tempe. It's this awesome Irish pub that blasts 80s/90s punk rock and it's got sort of an indie vibe to it. It's built in a 100 year old house and the upstairs is supposed to be haunted.

"Up the stairs at Weatherford, a ghost each place I hide." That's a reference to Hotel Weatherford in Flagstaff, AZ. It's a really old historic building built in the late 1800s that's also supposed to be haunted.

Maybe Jim has a thing for ghosts or something.

It should be "only for a night we believed in magic"

It can't be moment.
There's only one syllable.
