I happen to have a bit of background info: Sheryl used to open for Crowded House on their 1994 US-Tour, and they got along quite well. Around that time CH drummer Paul Hester became a father to a daughter he named Sunday, and it may be that she was not born on a Sunday. The underlying tone of anxiety in the song fit well with Hester’s state of mind at the time — he felt miserable on tour and quit the band halfway through it to be with his family.
CH frontman Neil Finn provided background vocals on this song, I guess it is no coincidence. |

Actually, to me it feels as if he is lying to himself, and she is just acting friendly to close the book. The fact that she almost did not recognize him says to me that there had been no forgiveness, just "phasing out" of the relationship, refusing to deal with the past. He does not perceive this and leaves thinking the flame could be rekindled. |

Eva blows away the competition on this one. Starts on a subtle note, but after the break and the da capo she delivers the final two lines with an incredible energy without ever breaking into a "soul diva coloration mode" that is simply stunning.
The last word breaks like a leaf in autumn from the branch of a tree. |

I have always liked the idea that while the guilt-ridden trip home (possibly from an affair) rings true, the imagery also fits to the outbreak of nuclear war: panic and alarn, ghost cars on the freeway, we (the dead souls) will fan the flames from on high. |

I agree with svengurk. A former girlfriend of mine has viciously defended her idea that this was about a woman's new life after she had met a new lover, but it feels so much more coherent when you read this being about the love for one's newborn child. |
